If not, I really can't judge without an actual quote. Many people find offense where there is none.

That and he recently posted a video that was ridiculously vulgar about women. He posts other sexist comments sporadically so imo, it’s a tone that shouldn’t be tolerated. If you’re active on there it’s hard to miss because he pops into a thread about politics or religion and will post demeaning comments about women. It’s a science forum not some sexist guy’s personal blog. Slippery slopes.

Tone policing? Based on only one past incident you've told us about. That sounds overly sensitive.

No, but "rape and pillage" has been fodder for comedy for a very long time.

And not everyone has the same sense of humor.

It's more than a few incidents, honestly. It's against forum rules to post borderline porn, Syne. You should know that, as you were once a mod. That video was borderline porn complete with seriously graphic lyrics, and James removed it and was pretty mad about it, it seemed. I mean, why post something so bizarre on a science forum in a political thread? From messaging a few times with James, he seems very fair to everyone, and he's been giving this guy a few chances now to improve. But, you can lead a horse to water...

I give people the benefit of the doubt, and I did with him.

@ confused, your seagull story makes me concerned. Sad Helpless and not knowing what to do has to be frustrating.

I'm only aware of the one you've told us.
I'm not defending that one video, but to misconstrue benign things in light of that seems too far.

I'm not going to post everything, but his posts haven't been benign. If they were, I wouldn't care then.

I wonder if I had remained active for the past few years on the forum, it might have gone unnoticed. It's one of those things, you leave, return...and you tend to observe, and notice things maybe you didn't notice in the past. Hard to say, but he's definitely their resident sexist.

Well, if you had a problem with his "rape and pillage" comment, I'm not entirely sure I can trust your assessment of what isn't benign.

Looking at a few of your interaction with him, that include the topic of sexism, it really does seem like you are misconstruing things. Especially if you think sexism is just "believing "men and women are inherently different".
Sounds like your nose is just still bent out of shape over that one video.

Buy hey, make of that whatever you will. I've got no horse in this race. Just an outside observer.
Syne is a disgusting misogynist incel. Ofcourse he's gonna blame you for the sexism. It's always the women's fault in their world.
@ Syne - Yea, you have to be in the threads to get a better picture. Isolated comments are hard to read. I don't believe that sexism is that - it's more of persistent attitude towards women. That video did shock me, and I'm not easily shocked. I can't see you or any guys here posting something like that. Ever.

Overall, I enjoy the site, but like all things...it's best in moderation. You know, I don't remember why you left, what I do remember is you were modding the religion section, right? i wasn't active for a while, and then returned and noticed that so many regulars had left.

Read a blog yesterday about how all forums are dying. I guess reddit is pretty popular, but I don't like the aesthetics/format of it.

SS and CC can tell you more about them than me since they are women and have seen what he posts about them. I tend to ignore most of his posts, but from what I've read it get's pretty nasty when it's about women for him.
I've had some discussions with him and I wonder sometimes, if that is his argument style. I've never felt like he has attacked my views, simply because I'm a woman. Hmm.

Anyway, I like your Defense of Space Aliens thread ...it's been quite active! Big Grin

Not that I managed to keep up with a fifteenth of what was posted in Sciforums even back when I "regularly" visited there back in the day, but I apparently missed "THE VIDEO" that was removed over there. As if I really wanted to see it and compare it with a potential contender (hip-hop in this case) deposited in Scivillage circa 11 months ago.

I don't keep up with pop-market music trends or a lot of entertainment areas for that matter, but the superficial impression I've gleaned from background controversy static is that some music genres can get away with literally anything nowdays. In contrast to relics like the "Beastie Boys" being taken to task for misogyny early in their career (as the article says, the oddball thing was that they happened to care about the criticism): https://slate.com/culture/2019/01/how-th...areer.html

The video here was described by the poster in the title as "incredible" (don't know whether that was in a positive or negative exclamatory context). So I guess it must be surprisingly horrific even for today's standards. I say "surprisingly" because in my pervasive ignorance or lack of updating with "what's currently cool" in various genres of the music world, I had assumed this kind of notorious pinnacle had been achieved or even been surpassed some time ago.

AFAIK, it doesn't advocate any violence but does romp through a porn-oriented vulgarity and explicitness concerning women being penile receptacles for male gratification. There's like what? -- a gazillion songs written over the past century that do the same general thing in a vastly more covert way.

So apparently it must be the forthright bluntness and HBO caliber lack of censorship that imbues it with any potential shock-value that the gazillion other "ho-hum" songs used to be ignored for due to lack of being that overt. Which is not saying there is any outrage over this one. Believe I did a search once and it turned up zip at the time. Which just reinforced my feeling that "Oh, I really am some neo-prude who's just out of touch with the music scene." I could just picture myself asking a groupie about it, and her responding: "Oh, that's just Lil Wayne. Whatever he does or wants to do, it's fantastic."

lol Yea, I hear you. It wasn't the usual stuff you hear on the radio, such as an explicit rap song or something. This video displayed a weird country guy singing lyrics of what he wanted women to do to him anally, orally...etc...the language was straight up strange and gross. Certain hip hop and rap songs can be explicit, but they're not like this. Put it this way, there were hundreds of youtube comments under it, outraged that it wasn't removed from youtube. It's just gross...and belongs on a trashy site, where he probably found it.

This video makes the rap videos look like a Disney movie. lol And the thing is, the guy posted it in the political section.

He has posted sexist comments in abortion threads, implying that women should be forced to give birth even if they are raped. People have railed against him about that, but he posts enough ''normal'' comments, to fly under the radar. He started a thread, can't recall the name, but I posted in it before all this started, and he replied to me 'I'm just a dirty old man, wegs.''

I didn't report anything right away, but once it became clear to me that this guy thinks free speech means that he can violate forum rules and post whatever he wishes...I thought I'd say something. Posting it in that thread causes awareness...and he's painting himself to look even more foolish with his replies to me. I'm not replying anymore.

There's a thread that popped up this morning under new posts I've noticed that he started, asking how to create a new account. Guess he thinks if he creates a new account he can still post this stuff? lol Can't make this stuff up. *smh*

Thing is, I don't care how he views women, just don't post stuff that is against forum rules, and degrades/insults women. There are plenty of sites that he could hang out where his views would be accepted.
