Well, the Fremen's last Reverend Mother did die, and Jessica is made up to look the same after becoming their new Reverend Mother.

I finally saw Part 2, and I'm less impressed than I was with Part 1. They created a completely new conflict between Paul and Chani that was wholly unnecessary, aside from artificially promoting Zendaya to a larger role. They somehow managed to make an epic story seem small and pivotal scenes less impactful. Both Paul and Jessica with the Water of Life, Paul's first worm-ride, etc. all seemed to pale in comparison to Lynch's. Part 2 seemed even less accessible to anyone who hadn't seen the Lynch version or read the book.
The Harkonnen didn't seem much less of a caricature than Lynch's. Maybe even more so in some respects. Ferguson didn't do anything to redeem her portrayal of Lady Jessica, and they lost the through line of Jessica and Chani both being concubines who were the real queens, rather than marriages of strategic convenience. I was impressed with Florence Pugh, even though I don't generally like her as an actress. She seemed to do a much more faithful job portraying a Bene Gesserit, especially in contrast with Ferguson. Maybe Pugh actually read the book, or watched the 1984 Dune. Lynch's Dune was far better in every respect... aside from the aforementioned ornithopters and voice. I'm not even sure Villeneuve's has much rewatchability.

So a tad surprised they're going for a sequel (based on the next book Dune Messiah). Though the box office success of Part Two would mandate it, regardless. Syfy's discount attempt also went for another round. The CGI effects of the first miniseries (Frank Herbert's Dune) were cheapo awful. Those of Frank Herbert's Children of Dune were better, but still stone-age compared to today.

Even Part 2 was contingent upon the success of Part 1. I'd have to see it again, but I might even rank Sci-Fi's miniseries above Villeneuve's, at least in terms of faithfulness and maybe even accessibility.

Plenty of fodder between the Butlerian Jihad and Book One, but this trailer doesn't really give me any solid idea of how this will fit.

My GAWD that was a brutal episode. They're going to be as unsparing in this series as GOT was..

Are three episodes enough to get invested in the characters they kill off?

By canceling "Westworld" before it concluded, HBO demonstrated that even it can suffer Netflix Aborting Fervor at times. So I may wait until the whole series has finished properly before watching. Granting that it makes it that far, which it probably will, but I've been snake-bit too many times by these Pay-TV _____, when I invested too early. At least APV seems committed to allowing an axed series to wrap itself up quickly and prematurely by extending it a couple of episodes for a mini "next season" that it normally wouldn't have. (Well, actually "The Expanse" got six episodes and TMITHT got its usual ten.) |
