another set of small swarm quakes in Alaska
very small swarm quakes around California
almost nothing up the western pacific plate side up through japan.
little bit of movement Guam little deeper than normal &  deep as usual around Vanuatu & Papua New Guinea

tiny bit of movement in indonesia, if they dont get a set of 4's and 5's for a few days in the next week or 2 then i might expect something closer to a 6 in about 3 weeks

lucky this 7.2(7.4) was fairly deep resulting in no tsunami. a warning was put in place through out the region to allow people to save their lives had a tsunami been created then once it was discovered there was no significant threat it was lifted

soo i am looking where there is very little to no movement for a while and that is the Philippines

after doing a bit of looking back at previous quakes, it appears there is a large 7.8 size every 2 years around the Philippines and Indonesia.
this seems to be overdue by almost a year.
from roughly looking at that data, statistically there is only around a 10% chance that 7.8 is shallow enough to the surface or close enough to the land to cause any serious issues.
but these things cant really be predicted.

pacific tsunami warning center results show a magnitude 6.8 but at a greater depth no current tsunami warning/threat though this may change
japan likely has a warning on coastal areas for strong tidal currents as a possible cautionary warning.

Officials say tsunami up to one meter high are expected along the coasts of Yamagata, Niigata and Ishikawa Prefectures.

we are now globally entering a new phase of natural disaster
now that we have massive amounts of rain in places over very short time where there is quakes, it presents a new natural disaster of landslides.

hillsides that have stood for over 100 years etc can slide from being soaked with a years worth of rain in just a day or soo on top of being already wet.
then a quake happens and the landslide starts.
or the heavy rain comes after a quake with smaller quakes afterward triggering land slides.

liquefaction may be an increasing issue around such heavily saturated areas.

Wasn't aware that GDACS actually had a live site mapping and charting the range of disasters from floods, droughts, volcanoes, tropical cyclones, and earthquakes. New events over the last four days in bold, with older ones in faded font.

i forget why i stopped looking at the previous one i use to use.


south east asia is well over due for a big one fyi

with all this movement around the plate edge over the last 2 weeks and still nothing significant in indo/Philippines....
its a matter of when not if.
'where' is the big issue and how deep.
there has been many 7.8 size quakes that have had little to no effect because of their location and depth.

the activity around the kermadecs etc seems unusual
but the sun spots are 0 and the solar wind is maxing and the moon is full
hhmmm..
i noticed some historic larger quakes with no smaller lead up quakes around such conditions on occasions.
the activity dies down to almost nothing, then a large quake in a semi isolated position while all the normal activity almost stops.
i didnt track the solar activity of those only planetary alignment and luna cycle.

i think japan could well do with some xray of their hillside areas.
