One question we might ask is why they didn't require a legit lesbian for the part, similar to Asia Kate Dillon playing the non-binary character Taylor Mason in Billions, or any of the various deaf roles over the decades that Marlee Matlin played.[1] Seehorn is in her 50s now, so it's not the usual "lipstick lesbian" excuse that the higher-up suits (or even show creators themselves at times) go for to appeal to the male porn audience. Ultimately, Gilligan wanted Seehorn in the series because she was a major part of the former BCS team (she was great as Kim Wexler), so that would be a demand that he just wouldn't let up on, even if they had requested authenticity.

[1] Actors of marginalized population groups arguably should be getting those jobs, just like Black actors being selected for Black characters.

Only in identitarian Hollywood do they forego acting skills in favor of identity. Deafness is a harder role to act, but plenty of people have done blind, gay, lesbian, etc. convincingly. And the justification of black actors playing black characters breaks down with the plethora of race-swapping of white characters... even those set in historically Anglo-Saxon eras/regions.

So "should" only really applies to historical accuracy. You can't say there are any marginalized populations in Hollywood when they are largely over-represented relative to their share of the general population.
