THE RUBIN REPORT
https://youtu.be/TipgoSgF1_M
(VIDEO EXCERPT) Chazz Palminteri: "Back then they made movies where the artist created the movie. Now, you have to be so careful of what you say in a movie. If it doesn't fit certain criteria, they won't show it. I hope it gets away from that, I really do. I hope it does because I mean, Godfather couldn't be made today. Midnight Cowboy couldn't be made today. A lot of great movies couldn't be made today. So, that's what's sad. I'm hoping one day it changes back, you know."
INTRO: Dave Rubin talks to Chazz Palminteri about his legendary career as the writer and star of A Bronx Tale; how the film grew from a real childhood incident and why it’s a father-son story more than a mafia movie; how Hollywood’s political correctness and obsession with blockbusters over artistic filmmaking is hurting the film industry; why writing fulfills him more than acting and how he stays apolitical in the industry; what it was like to work with Woody Allen, Harold Ramis, and Billy Crystal; updates on his new play, TV projects, and his NYC restaurants; and much more.
COMMENT: But it's nothing new. After the pre-Code era ended in the early 1930s, they tightly regulated and censored movies for almost three decades with respect to a different set of standards. The competition is at a higher level, today, though. In the 21st-century, a lot of television shows have actually been superior to cinema -- though circa 2015 to 2020 that industry similarly got taken to the woodshed and strapped on the backside. But it still has more creative fodder than non-independent movies, the latter which have taken up safe mediocrity in the course of not offending a global audience, and heavily recycling and rebooting old material from the past as an extended precaution.
