Well, after seeing "The Substance", I said later that I was going to watch her first full-length film from 2017. And this one is utterly freaking insane, too. After a mere two movies, you can definitely abstract a distinct and recognizable "Fargeat" style, especially as events develop along further.
"Revenge" is primarily in French, but there might be as much as 15% of the dialogue in English. So make sure captions are available, although the film is so visual that speech understanding may not even matter.
There is zero reference to Clint Eastwood westerns as a partial inspiration. But still, one of the three males sort of resembles the "Ugly" Tuco Ramirez character in the The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. And despite the "execution" method for the protagonist being completely different, and Matilda Lutz being the absolute physical opposite of Eastwood, I couldn't help but be reminded of Hang 'Em High. (I.e., how do you survive either one? The trailer obscures the goriest detail of her fall.)
The references to LA, Canada, and programming on the television suggest that the location is in a North American desert. But the lack of vegetation applicable to the latter becomes clearly evident as time goes on. Another faint echo of "spaghetti westerns", even if coincidental.
Another thing: With a a few horror films and thrillers under her belt, is Matilda Lutz on her way to being the Italian version of Mia Goth? Probably not, but she's going to play "Red Sonja" in an upcoming release this year. I have deep doubts that any adaptation of Robert E. Howard's work will ever be good... But who knows, unwarranted miracles can happen.
