AP keeps updating the incident each day, adding more details. Until something turns up that goes against the narrative that Crooks didn't talk about politics or seem to have any ideological views, the only apparent motive for shooting Trump is that he just desired achieving the post-death notoriety of having killed a controversial celebrity, former President, etc before he was taken out himself.

EXCERPT: Several rallygoers reported to local officers that Crooks was acting suspiciously and pacing near the magnetometers, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation. Officers were then told Crooks was climbing a ladder, the official said. Officers searched for him but were unable to find him before he made it to the roof, the official added.

Butler County Sheriff Michael Slupe told the AP that a local officer climbed to the roof and encountered Crooks, who saw the officer and turned toward him just before the officer dropped down to safety. Slupe said the officer couldn’t have wielded his own gun under the circumstances. The officer retreated down the ladder, and Crooks quickly took a shot toward Trump, and that’s when Secret Service snipers shot him, according to two officials who spoke to AP on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.

"Hating Donald Trump is a mainstream disease and has been since he first entered the 2016 primary contest.

It’s everywhere, from early morning to late night, and comes from people who probably never before thought they would think and say such things.

Leaders of the Democratic Party are especially guilty of routinely using the most inflammatory language when talking about him.

Nancy Pelosi called him Putin’s man in Washington. The facts proved otherwise, but not all facts are equal anymore. Feelings matter more.

“All of us want to defeat Trump, the most dangerous president in American history,” Sen. Bernie Sanders said in a fundraising email that arrived two hours before the assassination attempt on Trump’s life.

“The Threat Remains and Democracy Must Be Defended” screamed an email from Joe Biden at about the same time.

See, he’s a threat, he’s dangerous. He’s not a normal human being or normal opponent...

True, heated words and inflated language lead many people to open their checkbooks. It’s the sad norm of fundraising, especially online.

But the same words mean something entirely different to other people. If they hear them day in and day out, on television and in newspapers and on even acceptable social media, they begin to believe them.

Literally...

The really sad part is you don’t need me to tell you any of this. Just remember the first thought that came to your mind when you heard the news that Trump had been shot and saw the picture of the bleeding former president being lifted by beefy men in suits, blood on his ear, face and hands.

Once you knew he was shot at a rally, you knew everything you needed to know.

Age, fate, incompetence, and rapidly advancing senility have stripped the Biden campaign of its most potent ammo, but the one quiver Biden still has left is his thin veneer of likability... Biden has built his brand as a likable family man who’s simply a “nice guy.” Alas, he’ll have to sacrifice that image if and when he demonizes a man who just stared the Reaper in the eye. He might bloody Trump, but he’ll bloody himself even worse.

Still, the number one takeaway...

There’s a machismo gap (or call it a toughness gap). On one side, you have an unbowed, unbroken, unrepentant Trump, hoisting his fist in the air and urging Americans to continue to fight the good fight... Whereas Donald Trump is channeling his inner Stallone... Joe Biden looks older than the dust between Nebuchadnezzar’s toes. It’s a helluva contrast.

And it’s this contrast that will stay with the American people through November."

With the retribution fears a certain agency had about itself, and all the hysterical dialogues about DT becoming a dictator, it's certainly possible that they were considering bumping off Trump. Especially after Biden's dismal debate performance. Last resort time may have arrived. But if so, they still waited too late -- till an amateur took on the task alone, and now they can't do anything in the aftermath.

Unlike Lee Harvey Oswald publicly advertising that he was a nutter in various ways, Crooks was quiet and not on a Watch List. So the government apparatus couldn't recruit somebody whose inclinations they knew nothing about. They ultimately bungled it by holding off until a wannabe intervened and turned Trump into a surviving, living martyr icon -- the very opposite of what the apparatus wanted (a merely worshipped dead victim or imprisoned "felon-hero" who was no longer a direct election menace).

You have to take into consideration that the shooter was one of the disenfranchised youth, who likely took offence not just with Trump but the whole system. (Possibly fed up with "Old people" making decisions for them.)

It means if it had been a Biden rally in Butler, they might of attempted to shoot Biden instead.

No, he donated to a leftist political group. I agree he doesn't seem overtly ideological from what we know, but that's a far cry from saying any ol' politician could have been the target.

It suggests that the narratives of both sides basically fuelled that someone would attempt something to someone at some point. (It's already had other occurances of stirring up trouble like the Nancy Pelosi attacker and of course the Capital Hill Mob)

Back in 2016 (when he disliked DT), Vance even peddled the "Trump dictatorship" stuff and the other common memes that mainstream media experts still use today. It didn't happen during DT's 1st term, but I guess hope springs eternal. Kind of like the abominable failures of Marxism -- the people's paradise will still happen someday, with the Lord Protectors (literary intellectuals as ruling shepherds) finally bringing harmony and radical equality to humankind.
