Starlink has only been active in Australia for about 18 months and it's said to be "absolutely smashing" the Australian government-run "national broadband network", particularly in poorly served regional areas.

The Australian federal government says that it has convened a committee to study the situation, which must have Elon Musk absolutely terrified.

Starlink's Direct to Cell webpage has just appeared.
They say text will roll out in 2024. Voice and data in 2025. The plan was initially announced with T-mobile in the US, but they said foreign companies were welcome to join up. As of now they have Rogers in Canada, KDDI in Japan, Optus in Australia, and several others. It will work with existing phones, won't require any special antennas or any special apps. Just use your phone as normal and if a Starlink provides the best signal, the phone will default to that. Might not happen in urban and suburban areas with good cell coverage, but cell phone service in the remote Australian Outback will be great for the people out there. Up in arctic Canada too. Many rural areas with poor if any cell coverage will benefit. https://direct.starlink.com/ SpaceX graphics

Good report on Starlink from CNBC. It's actually quite objective and balanced.
