Russian Ukraine Invasion

At least 18, they are still going through the rubble. (Edit: it's apparently up to 21 now.)

Sirhiivka is a small place (~5,000 pop) a long way from the front, on the far side and some distance south of Odessa. It doesn't look to me to have any military significance. Apparently the missile (another Kh22?) hit between an apartment building and a recreation center. If the Russians thought that there was a militarily significant target nearby, I wonder what it was.

But this was very roughly the same stretch of coastline from which Ukrainian artillery was shelling Snake Island. Though the shelling was probably coming from further south closer to the Romanian border, since that is the closest point on the Ukrainian mainland to the island.

My speculation is that this was a bit of Russian payback for the loss of the island.

As for the human cost of this long fight, our tally of verified deaths in the regiment has risen from 39 early in April to 62 currently. Given the number of missing soldiers and some names not being published, the actual number lost is significantly higher and could reach 120. When one adds wounded at a ratio of three-to-one, total casualties are likely in the 400-500 bracket. This is about half of the 331st regiment's strength with which it would have entered Ukraine in February.

The impact on Kostroma is somewhat higher because the 1065th Airborne Artillery regiment, also from that town, has been fighting alongside the 331st in Ukraine, taking losses too. Local media has verified more than 80 soldiers from Kostroma have been killed in the months since late February, which compares with 56 during the Soviet Union's entire nine-year Afghanistan war.

what i see from the russian propaganda films is they are using their helicopters and air force to fire un guided rockets in all directions
notice the video of helicopters shows them firing in opposing direction near the end

The registered owner of the Zhibek Zholy, a Kazakh-based company called KTZ Express, has told the Reuters news agency that the ship has been chartered by a Russian company. It added that it was consulting the parties involved and would abide by all sanctions and restrictions.

Dirty Orcs Stealing Ukrainian grain & selling it to Turkey & Africa & Syria

Turkey is a HUGE holiday location for Russians
so while Russian tourism to Turkey has crashed i imagine Russia is selling stolen grain to turkey cheaply to make up for it.

i hope KTZ Express get their bank accounts frozen

this looks promising
side winders are fairly prolific in the usa so there should be plenty of supply

air defence is soo critical to Ukraine ability to protect its long range artillery
with nlaws stunga & javelins which can sit under neath 777's and himars ... it will stop the Orcs in their tracks
then when ready
hopefully some long range Ukrainian air support can be added to harry their supply points & ammo dumps and fuel depots.

Air defences
Ukraine has successfully denied Russia full control of Ukrainian airspace during the conflict, but has called repeatedly for better air defence systems.
In the coming days, Washington is expected to announce that it will send NASAMS, an advanced surface-to-air missile system to Ukraine.
Kyiv has also received S-300 air defences from Slovakia.

The Russian attack on Kyiv pales into insignificance compared to the 'shock and awe' tactics of the UK/US coalition against Baghdad in 1991.

Does Russia not have an equivalent to the B-52 to carpet bomb the city? Are air defences so good it is now impractical? Any ideas?

This mitigated demonstration wasn't performed on Kyiv, though...

Apr 15, 2022 - Russian bombers just carpet-bombed Mariupol

INTRO: Russian air force Tu-22M bombers flew into Ukrainian air space Thursday and dropped unguided bombs on Ukrainian troops in the besieged city of Mariupol, on the Sea of Azov coast. It was the first time the 120-ton, swing-wing, supersonic bombers directly have raided Ukraine since Russia widened its war on the country starting the night of Feb. 23...

Desert Storm was 1991, which involved bombing the daylights out of Saddam's troops to drive them out of invaded Kuwait.

Operation Shock and Awe was 2003 -- the Baghdad fireworks. Propaganda version from Channel 4 is here: https://youtu.be/rxgaYlkC2do

The caption (which I should have included) for the image of bombed houses was
"A young Iraqi boy carried a plate of sausage in the ruins of houses in an area west of Al-Ahrar Bridge, Baghdad, on February 20, 1991, after a recent allied bombing raid." which (if the caption is correct) would be collateral damage from bombing the daylights out of  Saddam's troops rather than the  1993 bombing the shit out of Baghdad -  my apologies to anyone who would not find having their house/street blown to pieces shocking or in any way awesome .

While "Shock and awe" may originally have been the name of a particular operation I now think of it as a military tactic involving 'shock and awe' - if this is technically incorrect I can only (again) apologise.

As to why Putin hasn't done (more) carpet bombing - ?

It must be because Vlad the Impaler is a nice guy. Bernie says so (sort of).

British billionaire and former F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone called Russian President Vladimir Putin a “first-class person” in a TV interview on Thursday, breaking rank with several other business and political leaders in the U.K. who have been critical of the Russian leader following his decision to invade neighboring Ukraine... (MORE - details)

Bernie Ecclestone really took morning TV to the next level on Thursday when he announced he would “take a bullet” for Vladimir Putin. He added that the Russian president is his friend and a “first class person” during the eyebrow-raising interview on Good Morning Britain.

Defending Putin’s brutal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, Bernie said Putin was doing what he believes “is the right thing” for Russia and claimed the deaths of thousands Ukrainian civilians as “not intentional”.

He added: “Unfortunately, he’s like a lot of business people, like me, we make mistakes from time to time.” (MORE - details)

lets all hope bernie gets his wish

why would russia not do more carpet bombing ?
because they are trying to promote a high tech military to conscripts & potential recruits as other states look on, like Belarus & Lithuania etc

while they carpet bomb with artillery which is cheaper

"shock & awe" was about getting the massive iraqi military to surrender and keep the tribal war lords in check

the army being soo vast with soo many strong holds hidden palaces and hidden weapons

the idea was hoping that all the military would surrender as quickly as possible when they saw the power & reach, while USA didn't want to get into another Korea or Vietnam like war

the oppressed iraqi people needed a new superior power to believe in

"We've monitored the Russian-flagged ship, the Zhibek Zholy, on its route from the Ukrainian port of Berdyansk to the Turkish port of Karasu. It is not clear where its cargo came from or how it was obtained, but Russia has been accused of stealing grain from areas of Ukraine it controls - allegations Russia denies."

It might be no easy task verifying the cargo as loot, unless there is dead to rights evidence via records or satellite footage or something.

At one time, the very idea of Russia generously exporting wheat would have been absurd, since it was a net grain importer back then. But now they supply more wheat to the global market than any other single country, and could thereby camouflage plundered grain amidst the massive legit shipments.

Bitten by Vlad: "Why would Vlad need to swag when Russia has plenty of its own grain?"

Why did the infamous Rex Brinlee keep stealing cattle, farm equipment, and pick-up trucks from car lots even after he became a millionaire? Must have got a high from either the elevated risk or continuing to demonstrate that he could still get away with doing anything he wanted to... (That video seems to cover only a tiny fraction of what he did, including various acts of arson and some bombings prior to the school teacher's wife.)
