What a cold and self-isolating attitude---that people have to earn your acceptance and respect for them as human beings. This can only be rooted in a horribly twisted self-concept wherein one must always work to deserve the acceptance of others, as if rejection and contempt is the given and natural state of being. Or worse still, that one does not even need the acceptance of others.

There's nothing self-isolating about simply understanding that you are ultimately the only person that can determine your own self-worth. You know, the sense of worth you have toward yourself. Only insecurities raise the compensating "need" to interject anyone else between you and your own value of yourself. Understanding my own responsibility for my own sense of self is actually quite the opposite of being cold or isolating. Where the needy must cynically use and manipulate people for their approval, I don't have any such ulterior motives to my relationships and interactions.

Acceptance is not the same thing as respect, as basic human respect need not be earned.

ac·cept·ance
agreement with or belief in an idea, opinion, or explanation.

See, demanding acceptance is basically demanding agreement...like a fascist. No one is entitled to agreement. If we naturally agree, we naturally accept each other.
Only the insecure and needy "need" the acceptance of others in order to feel good about themselves.

Quote:Such self-hatred, relentlessly projected as the hated other, must be a terrible burden to bear in life. How pitiful. Sad
Not being needy is not self-hatred, but I wouldn't expect the needy to understand that. Seeking the approval of others is how the needy assuage their self-hatred.

And you're the one projecting your own hatred, as usual, so I'm sure you know all about that terrible burned.

Seriously, little buddy, put me back on ignore.

I don't think I'm inherently better than poor children, cancer victims, rape survivors, or gays. I'm just not as unfortunate.

It's not unfortunate. We're the cause of their misfortune.

Then you have no pity.

I should have said a sense of belongingness.

Okay.

Bye, Syne.

There is no good science conclusively showing that anything but an actual direct abuser or past trauma causes their addiction, depression, and suicide. Otherwise, they wouldn't surpass suicide rates among Holocaust concentration camp Jews (25%).

During  the  12  months  before  the  survey,  14.6%  of  all  students;  11.9%  of  heterosexual  students;  38.2%  of  gay,  lesbian, and bisexual students; and 27.9% of not sure students had  made  a  plan  about  how  they  would  attempt  suicide.
...
Nationwide,  8.6%  of  all  students;  6.4%  of  heterosexual  students;  29.4%  of  gay,  lesbian,  and  bisexual  students;  and  13.7% of not sure students had attempted suicide one or more times during the 12 months before the survey.

Using slightly more detailed, but nonetheless still limited, data from survivors of the camps, it is estimated that the suicide rates in the camp were most likely 25,000 per 100,000 per year or higher and, therefore, enormous!

Again, what definition are you using? Or are you just making it up ad hoc?  Dodgy

pit·y
the feeling of sorrow and compassion caused by the suffering and misfortunes of others.

Do you really think compassion is discomforting? O_o
Do you only have "the desire to help them but [people] only to alleviate your own discomfort? O_o

No one is entitled to a sense of belongingness either. That would imply that they have some right to demand it of others...which again, is fascism, as it contradicts the freedom of association. Requiring other to provide you with a feeling of belongingness is not less needy and insecure than requiring external acceptance.

This is completely off topic but I'm curious. I don't think that I've ever seen you use the tilde before. C C uses it all the time. What made you decide to use it?

Really? So after saying "Bye, Syne", you're going to reply and ignore everything substantial in that post? Well, I guess we see your priorities. Rolleyes

It's a simple question. You don't want to tell me? Tit for tat. I'll respond if you answer the question.

At this point, I don't really give a crap. You've already shown your ass. I'm not going to reward that. Being intellectually honest should be its own incentive.

Hmm…an applied method of problem solving. I do love puzzles, but at this point, I have to consider personal gains. Perspectives! It’s all about perspectives—exploration and discovery. Seeing things through someone else’s eyes. Explanatory power—that’s what I seek. There are a (few members?) that have explanatory power but I have to consider informational value vs. extraction effort.

Let me know if you change your mind.
