The former seems meant to moderate internal reaction (by counseling not to take others' dislike to heart), while the latter seems meant to moderate external reaction (by counseling not to take ones own dislike too seriously). Men and women tend to feed different beasts. Man's beast is the one that seeks to make enemies of others, while woman's beast is the one that seeks to make an enemy of herself.
