Drinking gin makes you feel sexier

Geez!  Lay off the gin, will ya?

Alpha male: the dominant male animal in a particular group.

Researcher L. David Mech, one of the primary creators of the Alpha male hypothesis for wolves, later found additional evidence that the concept of an Alpha male may have been an erroneous interpretation of incomplete data and formally disavowed this terminology in 1999. He explained that it was heavily based on the behavior of captive packs consisting of unrelated individuals, an error reflecting the once prevailing view that wild pack formation occurred in winter among independent gray wolves. Later research on wild gray wolves revealed that the pack is usually a family consisting of a breeding pair and its offspring of the previous 1–3 years.

Researcher M.W. Foster investigated primates and found that the leaders were more likely to be those who did more for those around them instead of being determined by strength. Alpha (ethology) (wikipedia.org)

Hmm...altruistic behavior.  I wonder where we've heard that before.

You guys might fall for that alpha male shit, but arrogance, threats, coercion, and aggression isn’t my idea of a good time.

I sure wouldn’t want some big oof taking my beer.

For the umpteenth time, the alpha male is a myth.

As with all social status, it comes down to who adds more value, whether in terms of protection, resources, leaderships, access/opportunity, etc..

You're the only one here who seems to believe that "arrogance, threats, coercion, and aggression" are alpha traits, rather than just betas (who say those are alpha traits) acting out. In alphas those traits are expressed as confidence, protection, leadership, and restrained strength. The traits you list are only insecure overcompensation for these.

Just like your own link describes alpha pairs, alpha women are such "through social efforts and building alliances".

But just keep sticking your fingers in your ears and refusing to hear the actual arguments made. So much the better to protect your fragile biases.

[Correction]

For the umpteenth time, the human alpha male is a myth.

But just keep sticking your fingers in your ears and refusing to hear the actual arguments made. So much the better to protect your fragile ego and alpha male ideology.

Deary, you keep arguing a straw man. And you don't even seem to realize it. Rolleyes

All social structures have status hierarchies, and all such hierarchies have a top.

Human Alpha Male

"Alpha male can also refer to a high-ranked man in a human group. This may be in a business setting or sometimes in other competitive areas, like sports. However, this is an extension by metaphor: humans do not have the same mating system as other social mammals.

One reason is that the estrous cycle in humans is different. This has the result that females may be sexually receptive at almost any time. Also, humans generally pair off, and alpha males do not have exclusive rights over all females in a group, except in rare circumstances."

Well, you better get on with your bad self, Genghis Khan.  *Chop-chop*

But whatever you do, don't take their beer.  I would break your leg.  Wink

Again, who said modern human alpha males had exclusive rights over the females of a group or that human mating has a one-to-one relationship to that of any other species?
Just more in your long list of straw men.

In humans, might once did make right, and powerful men did monopolize the best women of a group (harem). The best competitors in a species tend to dominate the available resources and ensure the survival of their offspring. If you just can't bear to call that "alpha", that's your problem.

Wrong.  You're just a sore loser.

THE HUMAN ALPHA
The application of speculations about nonhuman primate behavior to the understanding of the human condition is fraught with peril. “Alphaness” is more an artifact of people’s ability to count than a matter of biology. Linear hierarchies are appealing, but the game paper, scissors, rock also can describe dominance. Researchers see an entire group, but animals may be more self-centered and see only their individual relationships with the members of the group. They may not have abstract concepts of group organization.

Dominance in human groups may be pronounced in institutions with a rank hierarchy such as the military; an alpha may be suggested when groups have a clear leader and the others are all more or less equal followers, but some human groupings do not show structures that suggest that individuals have histories of coercive relationships that lead to recognized superiors. Christopher Boehm suggested that many human social structures have specific mechanisms that preclude the development of alpha positions (1994). The existence of leadership does not require aggression or a history of aggressive contests, although that may occur in some circumstances. Superior reproductive success can correlate with high social status, but it need not. (Genetic fitness is defined by the number of replicates of an individual’s genes that show up in a future generation compared to the average individual in the population—roughly equivalent to the number of grandchildren or great grandchildren that one has. For the last several decades there has been an inverse relationship between economic status and genetic fitness.) Presumed correlates of dominance or alpha status cannot be construed as evidence that alpha status exists.

If the term alpha-male is used to indicate a male that uses social position to obtain more mating or power over others, surely females might do the same and there would be alpha females. These concepts are a far cry from the origins of the term in animal behavior, where alpha was used to designate the individual that could aggress against others without fear of retaliation. Whether dominance leads to increased mating or access to resources is an empirical question, and the data do not always support such hypotheses. Thus, the relationships among dominance rank, genetic fitness, and status are empirical questions with regard to humans as well, and one cannot assume that success in any one area implies success in the others. Researchers may describe alpha individuals of either sex or of a group, but they should describe data and not assume data on the basis of theory. encyclopedia.com

Oh, and as far as the pining for male friendship is concerned, I do think it’s important in the workplace. I hate golf, BTW.  It’s a city boy thing, but if you guys are out on the course, exchanging information and networking.  Where does that leave us?  I can see that there’s lots of obstacles, such as sexual attraction, common interests, misconceptions, and even the subjective component of sexual harassment, but cross-sex friendships in the workplace may be a barrier to career development for women.

Again, who ever said alpha males exist within highly-defined/linear hierarchies or are objectively or universally considered the clear leader? O_o
Just more straw men.

And the "inverse relationship between economic status and genetic fitness" (where number of children is no longer a function of genetic fitness) is an irrelevant argument against alpha traits.

In humans, the deference of beta males to alphas (man crush, subordination, etc.) doesn't require "histories of coercive relationships that lead to recognized superiors". Men with resources, opportunity, and access are valuable to lesser men. So betas willingly "suck up" to alphas without any overt domination at all. We're talking about humans, where social structure is far more nuanced than in animals.

If women weren't so catty, those who climb the career ladder, by play golf, ect., could mentor other women. Since #MeToo has ruined the idea of a man mentoring a subordinate woman. So either learn to love golf, etc. or cajole a woman, who may see you as a threat to her status of position, to help.

Alcohol just lowers inhibitions. To that end, one would be feeling sexier. Less inhibited, sexually, I guess? But, it also can lower other inhibitions, and turn people into ranting philosophers, or enraged idiots.

I don't think I like gin, might have tried it once.

I wonder why everything comes down to sex. Sex is awesome, but must everything revolve around our reptilian brain?   Blush
