That's a good quote, MR, except for the "American" woods bit, of course.
It's a universal thought, and deserves more than parochialism. I'd imagine there are more than a few men alive today who'd rejoice, if the only and most real threat were an enraged bear.

...and then they'd die, because they forgot to take it seriously enough.

And with regard to this, no. They don't.
James Baldwin gives far too much credence to human intelligence and introspection. Most will go to their graves hating the same things they always have, having never been forced to deal with anything at all.
