"A couple of months ago, my friend’s cousin (a single mother) bought a new cell phone. After a long day of work, she came home, placed her phone on the counter, and went watch to TV; her son came to her and asked if he could play with her new phone. She told him not to call anyone or mess with text messages, and he agreed.

At around 11:20, she was drowsy, so she decided to tuck her son in and go to bed. She walked to his room and saw that he wasn’t there. She then ran over to her room to find him sleeping on her bed with the phone in his hand.

Relieved, she picked her phone back up from his hand to inspect it. Browsing through it, she noticed only minor changes such as a new background, banner, etc., but then she opened up her saved pictures. She began deleting the pictures he had taken, until only one new picture remained.

When she first saw it, she was in disbelief. It was her son sleeping on her bed, but the picture was taken by someone else above him… and it showed the left half of an elderly woman’s face."

One of these months I need to see first hand what these "two sentence horror stories" on the web are about. The CW network has a show based on them that I've never watched, either.

I suspect they are just a contemporary continuation of what Fredric Brown started with his 2-sentence "Knock" short story back in 1948: "The last man on Earth sat alone in a room. There was a knock on the door..."

But I could be completely wrong about all of this. Idle assumption is the price one pays for obstinately refusing to empirically check something out or being extraordinarily tardy about doing so.

It was Forest J Ackerman who (after Brown) actually wrote the shortest story of all time (in speculative fiction, anyway). I expect it's been wholly forgotten by now due to him having to repeatedly bring it up himself when he was alive. It consisted of a single letter, with the title being:

Cosmic Report Card: Earth

When I was between 11-12 years old, me and another kid became lost in the woods of Northern Ontario. I remember walking for what seemed like miles. Tired, bug bitten, hungry and afraid we happened to stumble upon an old cabin in the middle of nowhere. As I recollect it was dusk, and in the fading sky we saw a light emanating from a window. We cautiously approached the cabin and instead of knocking, shouted, hoping someone was inside that could hear our call and help us. We could hear footsteps on the wood floor planking inside, until the noise stopped just behind an old wooden entrance door. The door opened and there stood a man, bearded and bedraggled looking, peering at us somewhat strange.

We didn't know what to say but I found the courage to ask him for help. He looked at us and without saying a word, made a motion inviting us in. I'll tell you this, the way to the front door was littered with the skins of dead animals laid out on racks. The smell was barely tolerable but when you're in the position we were in, anything inside looked better than the alternative. Besides the woods seemed alive behind us and we both unmistakably heard a grunting/breathing sound of a bear in close proximity. Choose the bear or go on in. We went inside.

Because our family lived in a rural area, I spent a lot of time in the woods as a kid. It was not unusual to run across a hunter or trapper. Basically they would ignore us or warn us not to go near their snares or advise on how to not get shot accidentally, bow or gun. Making noise and wearing bright clothing were a couple of good hints. Never heard much of child abuse, molestation, rape etc. in those days. That part didn't even enter our minds when we decided to go inside the cabin. It was a disaster inside, as far as cleanliness and order goes, but we didn't care at that point. The man should have seen by our appearance that this wasn't a social call, we needed help.

Besides some beat up furniture, inside was a large metal locker that looked like a refrigerator to us. He motioned to us to sit down at a table and at the same time put his fingers towards his mouth in an eating motion. Up until then, the whole time there we never stopped babbling on about being lost, or if he had heard about it or if he could help us. The only time he uttered a sound, it was like a 'mmmm', a reference to sit down and i'll get you something to eat. So that's what we did, not knowing what was on the menu. I remember him opening the door to this metal locker, reaching in and pulling out a large plate. There was something on it and he placed it in front of us, all the while still motioning us to eat.

We both gazed at that plate in horror for on it was, a headless skunk. Everything there except the head. Well if we thought we were scared before, now we were terrified. Both of us started wailing, using words to the affect of not hurting us and we want to go home. At no time did this man sneer or smile nor did he make threatening gestures. Then he pulled another plate out and placed it down in front of us. On it was the heads of 3 rabbits. One thing I will say is that all the remains in front of us looked fairly fresh, like he'd just killed them that day.

My friend Tim and I were near hysterical and I don't know where I found the courage but I remember grabbing my buddy by the shirt, getting out of our chair and easing our way out. On the way we had to move past the man and his opened locker. The path to the exit was so tight you couldn't run, only move sideways, and at any moment I expected him to grab one or both of us. But we slowly edged along until we got to a spot where the view to the inside of the locker was clear. Can't describe exactly what was in there but I know there was a lot of dead critters, some skinned and some not. Plenty of severed heads and even what we both swore looked like a pair of human hands. We continued to slide along between him and a nearby counter. He was so close I could hear him breathing and detect his distinct odor. I swear I've never been so scared in all my life. The man never said a word, never reached out or made a motion to block our path completely.

Next thing I know we ran for the door and got outside. He didn't chase. In fact I never saw the man again. We didn't care about bears, biting insects, the night or whatever was out there waiting for us. Fortunate for the moonlit sky, we just stumbled along all through the night, constantly listening for any indication that he might be following us. Made a few stops here and there just to catch our breath. My senses were so heightened that if a worm turned I'd have heard it. As morning came along we became more relieved but continued on regardless. Don't know how long we went on like this but in the end we came across an old road. Even then there were two bear cubs ahead of us. Not knowing where the mother was, we immediately darted back into the woods and waited for the cubs to move on. Finally we went back on the road and began shouting. Maybe another hour or so passed but eventually we were found by a search party member.

Tremendous relief, like ecstasy, one of my most unforgettable childhood memories. Ahh but it doesn't stop here. Of course we told our story to authorities. We had a hard time convincing everyone about what we had encountered, the cabin, the man, headless animals and human hands in the meat locker. Anyways, after an extensive search, no one found the cabin or man. It was a few years later when I was at a public library doing some research on some school project that I came across an interesting news story that occurred long before I was born. The headline read HERMIT CHARGED IN MURDER CASE. The story contained a report of the arrest taking place in a cabin far in the woods . Another story gave more details about the cabin. In it they reported finding numerous dead animals and a pair of human hands. Just so happened the victim in this case was missing both hands.

Don't know what would have happened if we hadn't gone into the cabin, whether one or both of us would be alive today. Was it a ghost? Did we trip back in time? Were we saved from serious injury or death from a bear on two occasions, just by being delayed? Did some mysterious force in the universe allow the man to atone for his crime,? I don't know. Freaky shit.

"Happy birthday, mom. Your granddaughter at the Eloi Institute got clearance to give you this present. It's a trip. The the two of you are going to visit where you lived a half century ago. But you have to be careful and not disturb anything."

LATER: "You were so cute back then, Dad. I just had to take a snapshot of you and Nana."
