Powerful 7.0 earthquake this morning in the Pacific off the Northern California coast. Despite its magnitude there are few reports of damage. It was strongly felt in the shore area closest to the epicenter, but only weakly felt elsewhere. And that shore area is a thinly populated very rural area.

I'm about 150 miles to the south and didn't feel anything.

They did put out a tsunami warning that led to many people fleeing the shore in the SF bay area, but nothing happened and the warning expired.

I’m a little closer and I felt it. We received an emergency notification of the earthquakes before they happened. There was a 7.0 offshore, a 6.6 inland, and a 4.3 south of me. And then of course, we received the Tsunami warning, and the coastline was evacuated. There was some damage reports, the usual foundation cracks, waterline breaks, stores with items on the floor, etc.

We want to get rid of Newsom, but not all of California.

Great! Just when I had almost completely forgotten about the ever-looming Big One to shake the whole Pacific Northwest! Get your shit together California! On the bright side maybe it released some of the strain on those two colliding plates.

I think they said three plates, a triple junction of the lithospheric plates. Cape Mendocino is governed the by San Andreas Fault, the boundary line between the Pacific and the North American Plate. North of the cape, the Gorda Plate, a small cousin of the Pacific Plate, glides under North America in the Cascadia subduction zone. This zone extends from Northern California all the way into British Columbia.

I thought the same thing, that it might release some tension or something. A few years ago, we had one here, and I had an old bottle collection on some shelves. They fell and shattered like powder all over my game room. Chipped my granite countertops. Pictures fell and broke, etc. It was a mess. Foundation intact though.

Still, I prefer earthquakes and fires to hurricanes, tornados, and snowstorms. Although, we’ve had a few of those lately, too. Undecided

An extremely powerful M 8.8 earthquake just hit in the Pacific Ocean off Russia's Kamachatka peninsula. Initial estimates by the US Geological Survey suggest fatalities in the 10-100 range along with very widespread physical damage in the nearest Russian city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (population about 187,000).

Kamchatka is very active geologically, famous for its large and active volcanoes.

There are currently tsunami warnings, advisories and watches in effect throughout the shoreline of the Pacific. Where I live we are currently under a tsunami advisory. (Latest is that Pacific Tsunami Warning Center predicts San Francisco will see less that 1 foot, which probably won't even be noticeable.)

Hawaii seems to be most threatened. It is under a tsunami warning and coastal areas are being evacuated as I write this. In Hawaii a full scale emergency response is underway. Hawaiian TV is saying "Evacuate all low lying coastal areas NOW". Sirens are blaring. The Hawaii governor is on TV with the emergency services director and the national guard commander.

So far there's been little sign of a tsunami in the Honolulu area.
