Hilarious that Billie Eilish believes her privilege and shame as a beneficiary of capitalism can be excused by donating money to charity. The wealthy have been doing the latter for various reasons since the dawn of the 20th-century, if not before. Which is why entertainment celebrities have to deck themselves in left-wing slogans and pithy Marxist echoes as a moral add-on, as they stand amidst the rest of the Olympus pantheon. Need something extra to appear more noble than and poseur-superior to their overall rich peers (some of whom, like Musk, don't vote kosher).

Taylor Swift is now a billionaire oppressor

INTRO: A mom has turned to the internet for advice after her teenage daughter “lost respect” for her over Taylor Swift’s billionaire status. Meaghan Carlson, 47, shared that her child was upset that she refused to condemn the Blank Space singer’s wealth. Her post on Threads, under the username @megplease, has garnered over 48,600 views.
“I still support Taylor Swift because my relationship with her music is not about a number. It’s about watching her work relentlessly since I became a fan in 2008, and understanding the nuance of how she actually reached her level of success. For me, that context matters,” Carlson told Newsweek.
“I can appreciate that impact while still heartily agreeing with my child that wealth inequality is an incredibly serious issue. Those two ideas do not cancel each other out,” she said. Newsweek reached out to Taylor Swift’s publicist via email outside of normal working hours.
Carlson said that Swift’s music has been meaningful to her during difficult moments in her life, and she views that connection similarly to how others rely on art or faith. She added that criticism of successful women is often shaped by misogyny and amplified by media narratives. While her daughter remains critical, Carlson said she respects her perspective and values the dialogue itself.
Her daughter, Freya, told Newsweek: “Taylor Swift is my favorite artist and has been for a very long time. When I recently watched a video explaining and putting a billion dollars into perspective, it was disappointing, since Taylor Swift has been a significant role model for me throughout the last few years of my life. One billion dollars is such an insane amount of money that it’s not comprehensible, and honestly, nobody needs that much money—it’s unethical.”
The 14-year-old said she does not believe Swift is a bad human and acknowledged that her own fandom has contributed to the star’s wealth. While she praised Swift’s charitable donations and support of employees, she said extreme wealth places people into a broader ethical category of billionaires and has shifted her perspective.
According to Forbes, Swift’s real-time net worth is $1.6 billion. She reached billionaire status in October 2023 following the success of her Eras tour, becoming the first musician to earn one billion dollars primarily from music and performances.
Debates around wealthy artists intensified in October 2025, when Billie Eilish criticized billionaires while accepting a Music Innovator Award at The Wall Street Journal‘s 2025 Innovator Awards at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. She also announced she would donate $11.5 million from her Hit Me Hard and Soft tour to charity.
“Love you all, but there’s a few people in here that have a lot more money than me. If you’re a billionaire, why are you a billionaire? No hate, but yeah, give your money away, shorties,” she said.
Tracy Lamourie, a celebrity publicist and founder of Lamourie Media, told Newsweek: “I think what is new here and is actually really significant culture-wise is that fandom is no longer ‘passive’. Being a fan of someone now means being challenged about the public figures actions or values.” (MORE - details)
