Is this an example of the standard of discourse one should expect at this site?
The place is extremely free-speech oriented, so it's very difficult to get banned here. Pretty much requires flooding and disrupting the site with inane, off-topic, hyper-monomaniacal posts. So it's a personal choice whether one wants to spend hours, days, weeks futilely arguing with or trying to correct a particular member or members. Many of us just have better things to do. As Syne mentioned, there's the ignore feature in User preferences, or the ignore capacity in one's head. I heavily rely on the latter.
Thanks. Are there any more serious places? Not hardcore science, still looking for the more casual, but at least where crazy and stupid is somewhat more contained?

Was there some test that I missed?

Sciforums (where Stryder, the owner of this site, once abided). But it can be intensely moderated at times when James checks in. I mean, over circa a quarter-century it has accumulated a vast graveyard beneath it of both reasonable and quackish members who have been lifetime banned. Not so much by James (who at one time even allowed Ostro to come back after the latter pleaded and attested to being rehabilitated), but by past multiple mods who (some of which) would whack anyone straying beyond correct speech patterns.
Note that there are plenty of eccentrics who pass through there, but they do get subdued (penalized) or kicked out eventually.
