Um, you don't actually join the military when you enroll in West Point. You graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree, and then if you don't accept the commission, you pay back the tuition. If you graduated under Biden, you could have decided your degree would serve you better in the private sector, and with the right major, you could pay back the tuition fairly quickly.

"West Point students are required to serve in the U.S. Army after graduation. They are commissioned as second lieutenants and have a service obligation, typically a minimum of five years active duty followed by three years in the reserve component.

Service Obligation: West Point cadets take an oath to fulfill a service commitment upon entering their junior year"
