Elon Musk & Twitter thread (updates) -- free speech and information control unrest

When looking at twitter I see a spooky X instead of the nice twitter bird. Can't say I think it's an improvement. Is the X related to kissy xxx's? X files? X marks the spot? X unknown? No, I really don't like it.

found an interesting article:
https://blog.britishnewspaperarchive.co....aris-1808/

In 1808 two French men decided to have a duel in gas balloons, the outcome was one shot the others balloon sending both the person he was dueling and his second hurtling into a rooftop to their deaths.

Now I'm not saying Musk and Zuckerberg should got to the same lengths (the death bit) but they could have their cage match suspended from a balloon (a bit like the red "drink" bmx/skatepark)

If it’s merely a charity event, then fine, but if not, it’s weird.

Debate? Dinner? Cage fight? Seems just plain weird to me.

His original vision for X.com was that it would be an everything-app. It would be an fdic-insured bank, an investment firm selling stocks and mutual funds, a payment processor app (Paypal) and maybe competition for EBay and Amazon. And now with Twitter I think that he sees it as the world's free-speech discussion board and source of crowd-sourced news (moving forcefully into the journalism space). It's already moving into Youtube's space with longer-form videos, livestreams and payments for content creators. He's already made it possible to make longer posts not bound by Twitter's old character-limits. (Elon says you could publish a book if you wanted to.) So it will be moving into the blog and online magazine space too. Video games, photo albums, email, voice mail, messaging...

Elon has just announced that video and audio calling is coming soon to X. Will work on iOS, Android, Mac and PC. And it won't require a phone number. Your X.com '@whatever' address will serve as your phone number. Apparently it will be available internationally.

Quote:So I think that what Elon wants to do is expand Twitter into something far more ambitious that will probably end up being almost unrecognizable from what it is now. His goal is to build something like WeChat/Weixin already is in China. (Except without the government control and censorship.)

Elon was on fire today, at a New York Times event...

This is why Elon is the best possible owner for X. Powerful people can't dictate editorial policies on X by threatening to withhold advertising dollars, since he's the world's richest man.

A minor nit-pick - what Elon's describing isn't exactly blackmail so much as it's extortion.

"EU sources have also said that the shortage of Irish-speaking moderators among some of the biggest social media firms may have resulted in far-right activists deliberately using Irish in their posts in order to avoid them being removed.

X, YouTube and Tiktok have all reported employing no, or very few, Irish-language content moderators."

yes ,thanks twitter for the non existent Irish language moderation that seem to have facilitated the organisers of the racist riots last week.

Are we allowed to say "fuck you twitter, fuck you Musk" here?

This site leaves a lot of room for people to say what they feel, think or mean here. All members (to my knowledge) are old enough to have their own opinions that even conflict sometimes (sometimes they boil over from elsewhere :/ )

I attempted seeing what a PC post would look like once with one of Syne's post/threads, It ended up making Syne think I was conspiring against them which wasn't the plan, so I've steered clear of trying to be the PC police (If the powers that be want to tame the wild west with us small sites using their social media legislation, they are going to have to put the work in).

I'm sure if Elon/Twitter wanted too, they could always "FU" back..
