LOL! There were no Muslims in Europe in 0 AD. Islam didn't exist until around 610 AD.
They entered Europe in 711 AD, conquering to expand their territory... some of which Europe eventually fought the Crusades, Reconquista, etc. to retake.
Just in the UK, there were 167,000 Muslims in 1970, compared to 4.1 million today. That's 6-6.5% of your population.

But I didn't see anyone claim it was "sudden."

The original poor joke was suggesting it was sudden due to the absence of realisation that such a number now exists. Like they missed that, like you are missing this.
