Today the Eisenhower carrier strike group, which had been in the eastern Mediterranean, transited through the Suez canal headed southwards into the Red Sea. These ships are expected to take up station in the Indian Ocean closer to Iran. In addition to the carrier, the group includes a guided missile cruiser and two guided missile destroyers.

The US navy also made an unusual announcement that an Ohio class nuclear missile submarine is also in the same area. This is unusual because the navy almost never comments on submarine deployments. (Subs are the original stealth ships.) The US has 18 Ohios, 14 of which are strategic missile submarines carrying 20 Trident ballistic missiles each with up to 12 MIRVed nuclear warheads per missile, and 4 are cruise missile carriers that carry 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles each. I expect that the boat within striking distance of Iran is one of the cruise missile variety with conventional warheads.

The very unusual announcement of its deployment was obviously meant to be heard in Tehran.

The webcam shows lots of explosions a short distance north of downtown Gaza. It appears to be Jabalia, about 2 miles north. Loud booms and big smoke plumes. Unclear if Israeli ground troops have reached there or whether it's airstrikes/artillery.
