The lamp is used to melt a wax stick, the molten wax is dripped onto an envelope to seal it.
One more, and then someone else can have a go.
Don't use google image search, because I got it from there, and you'll find it straight away.

What are these used for?

My dad called 'em "Setbacks"... an the largest one shown is about 1/2 inch long an they have been illegal for over 40 years.!!!
The hollow area woud be filled wit a boiled down sap from a particular flower blossem... an delivered by arrow or blow gun... an caused little damage due to the smooth surface which had no protrudin flanges... an wit relative safety woud anesthetize the creature it impaled... an its most lucrative use was in the capture of Gorillas.!!!  

They got ther name because a Gorilla woud often "set back" aganst sompitn before it became unconscious.!!!
