Oh no! The Orion on-board toilet is broken again! It vents overboard (polluting space!) and NASA thinks that ice is building up around the vent.

NASA has a good livestream from the Artemis II vehicle as it heads to the Moon. Both interior (showing the astronauts) and exterior (from cameras on the solar panels) when the astronauts are asleep or have private time.

A frozen turd in space probably contains more important information about us and the planet than the Golden Records of Voyager 1&2.

"The crew has had intermittent problems with their space toilet since launch on Wednesday, occasionally being told to avoid its use in favor of collapsible contingency urinals, or CCUs, bags used for urine collection that can be emptied to space later."

Well, that answers the question of whether they still retained some kind of old-fashioned system as an emergency back-up. Good that this problem emerged, since they can now install extra or more powerful heating units in the next mission to keep the vent line from freezing.

They are currently about 233,000 miles from Earth and about 38,000 miles from the Moon. They should make their closest approach to the Moon tomorrow.

Christina says that they have entered into the Moon's sphere of influence and they are now falling towards the Moon rather than rising from the Earth. Christina says the Moon is larger out the window than the Earth.

Here's what will happen tomorrow and when:

2:45 PM ET (1845 UTC) Lunar observation period begins

6:47 PM ET (2247 UTC) Loss of signal expected as Orion heads behind the Moon (~40 min)

7:02 PM ET (2302 UTC) Closest approach to the Moon, about 4,070 miles from the Moon

7:05 PM ET (2305 UTC) Orion reaches its furthest point from Earth

And here's where to watch:

They are about 250,000 miles from Earth and about 9,000 miles from the Moon.

They are back from passing behind the Moon and their closest approach to the Moon, and are on their way back.

"BREAKING: AWKWARD! Trump rambles incoherently to Artemis II astronauts – who have literally NOTHING to say back to him!

In yet another cringeworthy Trump moment, our President called the Artemis II astronauts (including a Canadian) and proceeded to ramble nonsensically:

“Well, I have to say I spoke to a very special person, Wayne Gretzky, who I think you know, the great one… They are so proud of you… You have a lot of courage… a lot of bravery and a lot
of… a lot of genius…” (Trump has a thing for Gretsky.)

Then ... silence, dead air, and awkward looks emanating from the video feed. At one point one of astronauts made a comm check, thinking they might have been cut off.

It was Trump even responded, “Yeah, I think we might have gotten cut off,” before launching into more disjointed praise about Gretzky and Canadian pride.

The silence from the astronauts was deafening. They had virtually nothing to say in return to the President of the United States.

The contrast between the highly trained professionals in space and the man on the ground who can’t stay on topic is glaring. That’s what happen when an incoherent 79-year-old goes live on a broadcast with the world watching."
