New Fire News

Good news from Mt. Wilson. The LA firefighters have managed to stop the fire just short of the observatory.

Map from the Angles National Forest twitter page. Mt. Wilson is at the lower left tip of the fire, where the black (controlled) and red (uncontrolled) outline lines meet. The observatory still isn't out of danger, but the immediate threat is reduced.

The North Bay is on fire again. They’re dubbed the Glass Fire, Boysen Fire and the Shady Fire. It has jumped the Silverado Trail and is making its way to the Oakmont community.  Oakmont is a senior community with roughly 4,500 residents that have been evacuated along with Kenwood, St. Helena, Deer Park, Pope Valley, Calistoga, and several more. It's really bad.

That's what this claims. Barring their also keeping such around as the boundary of an old fire's devastated area, it spreads outward with each update if efforts aren't stopping it.

"Red dashes on the map outline an area consumed by flames. It’s generated from data provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s GOES satellites, which is then processed by Google’s geospatial analysis platform, Earth Engine. The result is the shifting, red boundary that’s refreshed about once every hour."

Damn! That’s crazy. It moved fast.

My husband was ordered in and my best friend’s husband and son are working the dozers. Her husband sent us a picture of a helicopter dumping water on his son’s rig to cool it down. Right behind him is a man standing on his roof in flip flops with a water hose that’s barely dribbling. He said that one of the fire guys ordered the man to put on his K-Flex. He said that he didn’t have any. That he wasn’t a firefighter. He was an owner. My friend’s son said that the guy just looked at him and said, well, you’re going to f***ing die then.

I’m not into conspiracy theories at all but I am starting to get a little suspicious. There’s one that’s still burning here and a new one in the Paradise area again. I know there was red flag warnings, but they all seem to start up around the same time, and the whole election thing is kind of creeping me out.

I don’t know. Weird, though.

Entire city of Calistoga under evacuation order

http://nixle.us/C8ATQ

This map from Napa County Nixle appears to show where the fire is right now. It's based on satellite thermal data.

https://www.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer...2%2C102100

If its in any way accurate, it's not a pretty picture. They have a real emergency on their hands. The whole northern end of the Napa valley appears to be in grave danger. It kind of suggests that the fire is growing explosively and has exceeded their evacuation order and warning areas. From the looks of the map, the evacuation orders didn't extend to the Napa valley north of St. Helena and now the fire may be in the city of St. Helena. If so, people might conceivably be cut off and trapped north of there.

I'm trying to get better information.

The fire is approaching Santa Rosa too. For those who don't know, this is a fairly large city of about 177,000 people. Santa Rosa is still traumatized by the 2017 fire that burned into the city's northern neighborhoods without warning and destroyed 1000+ homes as people scrambled to escape. (Some didn't.)

The Sonoma County map is here

If CC’s link is correct about the dashes on the google map, then all of Calistoga is burned, and most of St. Helena. It looks like it’s still moving towards Santa Rosa along Hwy 12 and Mark West Springs. Most of the people in those areas are just finishing up with rebuilding from the last fire.

I can hear the cars on the freeway and large planes flying overhead. It’s usually quite around this time. I tried to check in on my husband. He said that he couldn’t talk. War zone. Blood and guts everywhere. That’s all I got.

Edit update: My husband just sent me a video. He’s in downtown Calistoga right now. It’s a ghost town, and the fire is close, but the town isn’t burning. Either those dashes aren’t accurate on the google map or they’re evacuation lines.

At least a few arrests have pointed to leftist "protesters" who want to "burn" the system down. And one apparently started several fires after being quickly released for setting the first. You can thank California's cashless bail for that one.

As far as conspiracies go, I'm not sure what Republicans would hope to gain from it in an election. Maybe eroding trust in Cali Dems from all the forest mismanagement? People do tend to vote Republican when they feel their safety is put in jeopardy, but I'm not sure if that translates to natural disasters.

I wasn’t thinking Republicans. I was thinking that the fires would make climate deniers look bad. I mean that is Newsom’s new slogan, "No Patience for Climate Deniers." His winery is currently in jeopardy.

I bought a table made from a guy in the Oakmont area a couple of weeks ago to stage a store.  His pieces were gorgeous. They were made from repurposed materials. He grew up near me and knew all the same people. He said that he sold his place and was moving to Oregon. His place is gone now. Totally destroyed along with all of his furniture. I wish I had bought more of his stuff. We were talking about the arsons in Oregon. I don’t if it’s true or not but he said that several of them were started by piles of broken glass on top of kindling.

I just did a quick search and there is one article that says the Lincoln County fire was sparked by sun rays shining through broken glass (and other unusual fire starts). But this site is indicating that it’s a myth.

Bushfire Myths and Misconceptions

I don’t know. I’m starting to get numb to all of this fucking shit though. One tragedy after another. I have to clean my house today because someone from the department might need a place to stay but I can’t even focus.
