You (Syne) sound like a philosophy major with your philosophy debate lingo...strawman, ad hominem, etc. "Where's you link, that's not a refute" "The Earth is flat and you can't prove it..."
Regarding talking out of my ass, unlike you possibly? that's not where my mouth is. I'm getting the feeling that you just like to bully/argue and aren't particularly interested in any kind of meaningful, intelligent, discourse.
I get it, you like to wave the flag, salute the military, you are concerned about yourself but not so much about others, change is not your thing and black and white TV's were the best TV's, am I right!
If a dingo ate your baby, I apologist in advance.
Who asked you to quote back to anything? O_o
That's okay if you're not familiar with common concepts of intellectual honesty and supporting your claims. Just means you're no challenge to rebut. Completely your call, mate.
When I see meaningful, intelligent discourse, I'll become interested. Waving baseless opinions around is meaningless.
Maybe you like to poison the well so much because you're actually not familiar with the intellectual dishonesty of the tactic. I guess ignorance is bliss.
This one may make my ignore list in record time.

I'll bet it does. Bullies don't tend to take as well as they give, mate. You're pretty good at name calling but I don't think your discussion skills are much above that of an engineer but we'll see.
I haven't given up on you yet, mate. Fair dinkum.

It now doesn't take more than about 4 posts for Syne to show his true prick nature. He's losing his grip on appearing to be a normal civil person. Even the newbies nail him right away. Poor Syne. Can't hide behind niceties forever can ya?

Ah, the cheerleaders for the intellectually dishonest have arrived. The mutual consolation committee.

But where, pray tell, did you see "name calling"? O_o
Are you going to be like most here and continually make that accusation without ever backing it up too?
If I couldn't take it, MR would be on my ignore list. Only posters who can't manage to argue the merits of their opinions/claims, at least occasionally, land on my ignore list. So you've got a fair shot, if you bother. So far, I see no reason to care if you do or not. Flip a coin, mate.

Cheerleaders? Hah! Giving someone a little heads up is simply the polite thing to do.

Bingo!
But an engineer, a philosophy major? Oh, hell no. You’re giving him way too much credit. He’s a just big Ben Shapiro and Jordan Peterson fan. I’m not quite sure why he’s ripping on the liberal arts, though, because he used to tinker with computer animation.

While those who can compete in an open market don't. The difference is that the former has relatively useless skills/knowledge with little inherent market value (read no one wants it enough to pay for it) and the latter provides things people want. Basically, people wanting to get paid to pursue their hobbies like taking the hard-earn money of others to do so. Selfish pricks.
That's a rather harsh view of others isn't it? People major in what they want to major in and if it isn't as marketable, if they are intelligent, they usually do fine. If not, Burger Kind and Amazon warehouses.
With the possible exception of CC, I'm probably the only philosophy graduate on this board. (I actually went back years later and did an MA, simply for personal interest.) And I've done ok. Not a Silicon Valley billionaire, but middle class (more or less). I've never had a job that was seeking philosophy graduates, per-se, but a number of jobs that wanted educated literate people.
Quote:The way I read that survey though is that most college students aren't very well informed regarding "socialism".
Yes. I suspect that the shift to the left among philosophy students in the last 20 years (it's fairly recent) is mostly a function of how they are taught and who is teaching them. Most of the senior professors in the humanities subjects today are baby-boomers, products of the "student movement". They had student deferments that kept them out of Vietnam, they went on to graduate school to keep those deferments and because they loved the student life, and eventually became PhDs. So they moved into university teaching, something they were already familiar with, something that would keep them in the university social life (while making them 'big man on campus' so to speak) and something that was far less intimidating than looking for a job in the private sector where they would need real practical skills.
And this baby-boomer cohort has controlled access to the humanities-teaching profession ever since, by controlling which graduate students eventually receive doctorates, and by controlling hiring and tenure decisions.
Quote:The ones who were for it were largely liberals and those who were against it were conservatives. If the international relations majors were for it, that's surprising since they should be knowledgeable regarding socialism. The business majors, not so much.
While I think that all the humanities disciplines tilt left these days, from my perspective Philosophy majors aren't the farthest left by any means. Literary Theory is far more politicized and the worst examples are things like "Cultural Studies" and "Gender Studies". Those latter programs wear their biases on their sleeves and are just finishing schools for activists.
A related force pushing philosophy leftwards these days is the gradual shift from "analytic" to "continental" philosophy in many philosophy departments, particularly some of the more prestigious ones. 'Analytic' philosophy is very technical, abstract and... well, analytic. It's always been more closely aligned with science. While 'continental' philosophy is more arty and 'touchy-feely', joined at the hip with literary theory and fundamentally politicized.
Paradoxically, in places like France, Germany and Italy where 'continental' philosophy originated (in reaction to the trauma of the World Wars and their intellectuals' infatuation with Marxism), we see a corresponding recent interest in and growth of 'analytic' philosophy. So some very good analytic philosophy is coming from the European continent these days, while some of the leading continental philosophy is coming from the United States.

I was a biology major as well, though not at the same time. No graduate work in biology though.

If see that you have a problem with everyone. That's not a good sign. Why are you so misunderstood? That's just not fair.
Name calling? That's everywhere. You referred to me as "talking out of my ass". Unless you were born in a barn (possibility noted) that qualifies along with calling your friends "intellectually dishonest". Wake up and smell the roses, they are everywhere.
We don't really need to know (or care) who is on your "ignore" list. I'd be careful with that, mate, or you'll have no one to name call.
Just between you and me, you don't have a degree of any kind do you? That's what I thought. That's OK, I still like you but I'm not sure about some of these others (wink, wink).
"Red Herring", everything is one when you don't have an answer, eh mate? Our President is never wrong but everyone else is. I'll invite him in and it will be just you two and your ignore list. G'day Sunshine.
