Teacher fired for asking Trump to 'remove illegal students' from school (educational styles)
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-48503822

EXCERPT: A Texas school district has fired a high school teacher who tweeted to US President Donald Trump to ask for help reporting illegal immigrant students. [...] The tweets, under her now-deleted ... account, began about three weeks ago when she described the school district as "loaded with illegal students from Mexico", and suggested there should be someone at the school "who should be actively investigating & removing illegals that are in the public school system".

[...] the Fort Worth Independent School Board of Trustees unanimously voted to terminate her contract [...] During the meeting, 15 people spoke in support of her firing ... Immigrant advocacy group United Fort Worth criticised Ms Clark as a teacher "who wants to turn classrooms into deportation zones."

[...] A Facebook group called Fort Worth Republican Women, defended the teacher and lashed out officials who they said were violating her constitutional right to free speech. "The students were offended by a teacher asking the President, Donald J Trump, to enforce the law so she's disciplined?" the group wrote. "Would the same be true if another teacher supported illegal immigration?"

In 1982, the US Supreme Court ruled that public schools are required to teach children, regardless of their immigration status. Schools are prohibited from asking parents about immigration status or reporting family members to authorities. (MORE - details)

Flight shaming a growning trend (steampunk lifestyles): In Lorna Greenwood's London home, there is a shelf lined with travel guides. But the 32-year-old mother and former government employment lawyer has given up flying. Greenwood, who grew up enthralled by the possibilities offered by plane travel, is part of a growing group of environmental activists in Northern Europe who are shunning flights as concerns about global climate change increase. "It's a tough pill to swallow, but when you look at the issues around climate change, then the sacrifice all of a sudden becomes small," Greenwood said.

A Swedish-born anti-flying movement is spreading to other European countries, creating a whole new vocabulary, from "flygskam" which translates as "flight shame" to "tågskryt," or "train brag." A number of famous Swedes have stopped flying, including opera singer Malena Ernman, the mother of teenage activist Greta Thunberg who has thrust climate change into the spotlight... (MORE)

Does Flight-Shaming Over Climate Change Pose An Existential Threat To Airlines?: . . . Airline travel is now considered responsible for almost 3% of global carbon emissions today. Left unchecked, emissions will grow along with airline passenger traffic, expected to grow at a 3.5% per year clip through 2036, when 8.2 billion passengers will travel by air.

Anti-airline sentiment seems to have crossed the pond from Europe to America as well. A proposed Green New Deal bill called for the United States to “build out highs-peed rail at a scale where air travel stops becoming necessary.” In an early FAQ, its authors wrote, "We set a goal to get to net-zero, rather than zero emissions, in 10 years because we aren't sure that we'll be able to fully get rid of farting cows and airplanes that fast.”

The airline industry mocks such sentiment at its own peril. Although it failed this time around, the Green New Deal proposal was signed by Representative Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez and 67 Congressional co-signers, and may well be a significant issue in the 2020 US elections. (MORE)

“Flight Shaming” or Flygskam simply will not work in the USA. Airline travel trumps “Train Brag” or Tågskryt!: . . . Now I am as concerned about the environment as the next person and take steps to limit my carbon footprint – but not when it comes to flying. [...but...] when it comes to the USA, this country really just is too big to not fly where you want to go. Oh, and the rail system in this country is simply nothing like those in Europe (and other places on the planet). (MORE)

There were apparently a host of other reasons for the teacher's firing, so it may not be accurate to say the tweet was anything but a last straw...or just makes for a better headline.

Lady across the road from me is a travel agent who specializes in booking sea cruises. There’s also a couple I know who are going on a cruise in November. What they all have in common is that they advocate green Earth policies and willingly join in marches, protests, etc against fossil fuel use. All nice people and friends for years. I feel I’d risk destroying our good relationship by pointing out their hypocrisy but at the same time I think by not speaking up, I’m just as guilty.

Then again, I have no interest in cruising or protesting.  My friends don’t critique me for being that way, so why should I speak out against what they’re doing? Plus my only grandkid lives 4000 km away and I’ll be taking a plane.

"Watch a Cruise Ship Pollute as Much as 13 Million Cars—in One Day"

Apparently top executives are deemed to have their own personal yachts for that sort of thing, so that there's no crossover into the vacation modes of everyday Green Puritans. Thus they preach abstinence with regard to an industry embroiled in business flights, but no self-chastising the whorishness of "our scenic recreational ventures".
