More leftist hypocrisy, shutdown edition

Americans will only be able to return to work, Obama said, "when Republicans realize they don't get to hold the entire economy hostage over ideological demands."

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer's office reiterated that Democrats are unwilling to negotiate any border security funding until Trump reopens the government.

"Nothing has changed with the latest Republican offer," Schumer spokesman Justin Goodman said. "President Trump and Senate Republicans are still saying: 'Support my plan or the government stays shut.' That isn't a compromise or a negotiation — it's simply more hostage taking."

So when the president is a Democrat, Republicans in congress are holding the country hostage in a government shutdown, but when the president is Republican, Republicans are still holding the country hostage in a government shutdown.

Doesn't work that way, lying pieces of Democrat crap.

And? Taking credit for a shut down already blamed on Trump and the Republicans is not hostage taking. The president cannot take anything hostage by exercising his veto authority. If the Obama shutdown was hostage taking by the Republicans, this one is hostage taking by the Democrats. Simple honesty.

Can someone explain to me how depriving the average government employee of their take-home pay is somehow supposed to make the left agree to pay for the wall? Huh  If anything, Trump will probably lose many votes of those who are struggling right now, and are pawns in his shut-down game. I'm not a leftist, I just don't see the mindset behind this.

The worst part of it is Trump is doing all this just to please his stupid xenophobic base which is only like 30% of Americans. They're the ones he got all hyped up about building a wall, announcing it at every campaign stop. He even lied that Mexico would pay for it. So now he has to make up some bullshit border crisis, even though border crossings are at their lowest in years, and he's holding 800,000 federal employees hostage to get his wall. Trump will go down as the worst president in U.S. history.

More federal government workers are Democrats, as working for the government seems to be how those who believe in dependence nuzzle even closer to the government teat.

A recent analysis by the Washington Post suggests that in the 2018 election, federal employees did make significantly more donations to Democratic candidates than Republicans: Between 60 and 80 percent of donations went to Democrats. ... So Trump is almost certainly correct that his shutdown disproportionately affects Democrats, though perhaps less than he might believe.

So it's actually hurting more Democrat constituents, and they have their own Democrat politicians to blame. It's also about not rolling over like Republicans have been wont to do and why the last government shutdown accomplished nothing. You don't generally take a stand unless you're willing to see it through. Remember, Obama tried to make the last shutdown hurt more by closing open air memorials and public lands.

During the shutdown of 2013, the Obama Administration turned our public lands and war memorials into political weapons, denying veterans access to the very monuments built in their honor. We were there; we stepped in; we stopped it. In contrast, during the shutdown of 2018, the Trump Administration did its job and kept our public memorials open.

In 2013, what President Obama did was nothing short of a political stunt. To make our veterans feel the pain of the shutdown, he weaponized our public lands. He actually had park officials working overtime to erect barricades and stand guard to deny access to open air memorials, which were normally open 24/7. Worse still, he did this knowing that groups of WWII veterans were planning once in a lifetime visits to the memorial erected in honor of their fight for freedom.

Did the Democrats denying government employees their pay and Obama barricading public areas help fund Obamacare? If so, there's your answer.

No, with Trump is likely more about appeasing his ego by accomplishing his campaign promise. For people who want the wall, especially those who live near the border, it is about security. And there is a crisis:

As the number of Central American women and girls crossing into the U.S. continues to spike, so is the staggering amount of sexual violence waged against these migrants who are in search of a better life.

According to a stunning Fusion investigation, 80 percent of women and girls crossing into the U.S. by way of Mexico are raped during their journey. That’s up from a previous estimate of 60 percent, according to an Amnesty International report.
...
Through May, the number of unaccompanied girls younger than 18 caught at the US-Mexico border increased by 77 percent.

But while many of these girls are fleeing their homes because of fears of being sexually assaulted, according to the UNHCR, they are still meeting that same fate on their journey to freedom.

Rape can be perpetrated by anyone along the way, including guides, fellow migrants, bandits or government officials, according to Fusion. Sometimes sex is used as a form of payment, when women and girls don’t have money to pay bribes.

The assaults are so common that many women and girls take contraceptives beforehand as preventative measures.

Or don't you think that is a humanitarian crisis? O_o

LOL @ Syne's sudden "concern" for immigrant women getting raped on their way to the U.S. border. So this is the reason we suddenly need a wall? This is your so-called "crisis"? Total bullshit. That makes no sense whatsoever, especially when Trump is doing everything in his power to deny these victims asylum and protection in the U.S.

Nothing sudden about it. And I notice you STILL haven't acknowledge that as a humanitarian crisis. It was a humanitarian crisis when all the unaccompanied minors were being sent thousands of miles to get here under Obama too. And we've needed a wall the WHOLE TIME. And Democrats already voted for the Secure Fence Act of 2006.

Obama, Clinton, Schumer and 23 other Democratic senators voted in favor of the act when it passed in the Senate by a vote of 80 to 19.

The hope of asylum or getting in illegally is what makes people take the risk in the first place. Stop the incentive and you stop the rape.

A wall certainly wouldn't stop that. The latest caravan from Guatemala walked to a port of entry in California. That's where all the asylum seekers go. Ports of entry. A wall will do absolutely nothing to stop that. It's a bullshit excuse to fan xenophobic fear of immigrants. That's all it is.

CBP can only house and process so may asylum seekers, and the previous "catch and release" policy just means they end up being here illegally anyway, where they can still be taken advantage of in things like sex trafficking. And when told they must wait, many enter illegally. So if illegal entry were more difficult, they would know that they could face a backlog of asylum processing and have to wait in Mexico indefinitely.

The European Court of Justice (ECJ), supreme court for the European Union (EU), has ruled that would-be migrants must seek asylum in the first country they reach.

CNN, one of the many media outlets reporting on the ruling, says this: "The European Union's top court has ruled that refugees must continue to seek asylum in the first European country they reach, even in exceptional circumstances like the migrant crisis of 2015."

So by the enlightened European standard, South American asylum seekers should be seeking asylum in Mexico anyway.
