It's entirely feasible to me that out in the wilderness, where the edges of our tight cultural paradigms start to unravel, that the paranormal is more likely to occur in league with any accompanying madness or dysfunctional psychic upheavals one may personally undergo. These beings prey upon fear and mental weakness, possibly even leading to some form of transient attachment. Jesus was tempted after 40 days in the desert by Satan. There may be more to that ancient fable than we assume.

Aldous Huxley's "reducing valve" POV can play a role here. In the case of a character in a simulated reality who is complex enough for conscious experiences.... When her virtual "brain" is stable she easily blocks out the rich background "noise" of the overall simulator's processing. But when psychologically challenged or mentally vulnerable, some of the "data files" necessary for fabricating and sustaining the surrounding environment will bleed through information-wise. Although the files (figurative) pertaining to the location's history might not usually be recruited and in play, due to the normal boundaries between her identity and the simulator's overarching identity breaking down a tad, she could find such data of the past being arbitrarily received by her sub-system and converted into manifestations.

Aldous Huxley: To make biological survival possible, Mind at Large has to be funnelled through the reducing valve of the brain and nervous system. What comes out at the other end is a measly trickle of the kind of consciousness which will help us to stay alive on the surface of this particular planet. To formulate and express the contents of this reduced awareness, man has invented and endlessly elaborated those symbol-systems and implicit philosophies which we call languages. Every individual is at once the beneficiary and the victim of the linguistic tradition into which he or she has been born -- the beneficiary inasmuch as language gives access to he accumulated records of other people's experience, the victim in so far as it confirms him in the belief that reduced awareness is the only awareness and as it be-devils his sense of reality, so that he is all too apt to take his concepts for data, his words for actual things. --The Doors of Perception: Heaven and Hell

"I was attached to 2/3 INF 3 SBCT at FOB Patriot. A call went out on the radio that FOB Diamondback (the airfield) was under attack. Everyone on every FOB from, Courage, Blickenstaff, Patriot and Marez jumped into the closest vehicle and headed to the airfield to counter the attack. I was in a vehicle with some other infantry guys, an engineer and a PsyOps guy. When we got to the airfield we saw some dudes trying to climb over the wall. The gunner opened up on them and the rest of us took up a position in a ditch on the other side of the road and opened fire. There were three of us side by side, the engineer, the PsyOps guys and myself. We fired and one guy and he dropped from the top of the wall (hard to tell who actually shot him). Right after he fell there was stream of black smoke coming out of him. The engineer made that comment that he must have been wearing a suicide vest and it malfunctioned. A few seconds later the black smoke grew larger and started to take a human looking form. What happened next all three of us saw and there was no doubt. The now fully materialized black smoke was standing upright and now had red smoky glowing eyes and a weird looking mouth. The damn thing actually smiled at us and turned to, sort of run but it just dissipated after it took a few steps. Very hard to describe how it all happened. All three of us just looked at each other wide eyed for a second or two. After it was all over we only spoke about once then never again."

"I am a soldier in the US Army and was recently deployed to the Iraqi desert with a medical unit in support of OIF. We were in the middle of nowhere in these abandoned buildings. Several people have experienced "strange phenomena" while we were there, but this is my experience. One night, while I was on guard duty, our duty phone rang. My battle buddy and I assumed it was an emergency and someone was hurt, being that it was almost 2AM. I picked up the receiver and before I said anything, to my surprise, there were several voices talking at once and all in Arabic. They sounded frantic, but they also sounded like they were talking through cotton. I assumed it was a wrong number and hung up the phone. My battle buddy and I looked at each other strangely and I recorded the phone call in our log. The rest of the night went on without incident and we were relieved at 08:00. The soldiers replacing us went through the log and questioned the phone call incident. I told them what happened and they looked at me like I was crazy. I didn't understand until I looked at the phone cord behind the table. It wasn't plugged in! Rumor has it that the place we were staying is where a lot of people were murdered at one time, but I don't know for sure. I do know that it was a very creepy place and I'm glad to finally be home!"

Since they had already read his log, the replacement soldiers could have unplugged it themselves as a privately smirking prank.

How a duty phone would otherwise ever be disconnected for long in the first place would suggest lax routine inspections. Or an outright lack of scary disciplinary penalties should an explanation of its unplugging revolve around a theory of his "buddy" having deliberately disconnected it himself on the sly earlier (prior to a mysterious and technologically impossible call) because he didn't want a period of uneventful guard duty to be interrupted by anything major that night.

Or not. I'll just take the word of the guy that was actually there.

One thing about it. When you are relieved on watch, you are at your station till the reliefs come and take over. There was simply no opportunity for anyone to unplug the phone while they were still there.
