Travels in India: The hauntings of South Park Cemetery, Kolkata (Calcutta)

EXCERPT: [...] As far as ghost sighting is concerned, the South Park Street Cemetery, Calcutta offers a good fodder to the scoop-hungry media and the sensational news- hungry public. One of the oldest graveyards of Kolkata (then Calcutta) built in 1767, it houses more than 1600 graves, mostly British soldiers who died in India in isolation far away from their motherland. [...] The state government is taking serious efforts to restore the graveyard from the shadows of isolation, mystery and degradation and steps have already been taken up with some organizations in India and abroad.

[...] Many of the age-old graves - big and small, simple and embellished are covered with creepers and moss now. There are growths of wild trees and plants, creating a dilapidated, an eerie and bizarre appearance in the midst of scary silence. The hazy shadows of tall swaying trees on the walls of the tombs, the gentle fluttering sound of tree leaves and the hissing sound of the normal wind blowing across the grave are good enough to increase people's adrenaline if they step into such surreal places as the South Park Cemetery after sundown. Besides, these may create hallucinations of some kind of unnatural sighting if the anxiety and fear have a strong grip on the weak mind. It is reported that in the past some people on a visit to the graveyard to take photos, all of a sudden, experienced strange things....

Right..the "weak"minded people that go into spooky cemetaries at night in the first place..I wish I was that weak.

Growing up as a kid I lived very close to a big cemetery. When our parents allowed us to sleep in a backyard tent we'd often sneak over to the cemetery and check it out. We even tried sleeping there. Anyways, there are many strange noises in a graveyard at night, they sound spooky as hell and I wouldn't fault someone for getting a little frightened. However, when no one knows you're there it's easy to sneak over to the source of the noise, especially when it's almost pitch black. Every time without fail, the noises were being made by humans. Either they're moaning and groaning in despair or at times in ecstasy, if you get my drift. Drunks and weirdos frequent cemeteries at night too. I can't tell you what a perverse pleasure we got by shouting 'BOO' or screaming at the top of our lungs and then watching the reactions of the live ones.

How astute of a kid to rule out weird noises in a cemetary at night as people making noises "every time without fail." You must've been quite the expert debunker back then. Did you write any books?

How is it debunking? You wouldn't investigate the source of noises in a cemetery? Sorry, didn't hear or see any ghosts, not to say others may have. If a ghost story is in a book, is it true?

No..I wouldn't go running after every strange noise I hear in a dark cemetary. And I doubt a bunch of scared kids would either. Unless they were just there to bust people having sex or fuck with homeless people.

Is there something to be afraid of in a cemetery? Or the cemetery itself? Do you suffer from......

Coimetrophobia? The fear of cemeteries. People with this phobia also do not like dead bodies, tombstones, going to, reading about or hearing about funerals.

This isn't your run of the mill cemetery, it actually has a highway running through it, cutting it in half. It's quite huge with many roads within and very accessible, no gates. Maybe we should have been afraid that we'd get hit by a car.

Sure there is. They're called ghosts. It's what everyone in the world is afraid of in a cemetery at night. Except ofcourse for you and your childhood buddies. Allegedly I mean..

Good Grief! Everyone in the world?

Here in Niagara there are several battlegrounds & war cemeteries from the War of 1812-14. You can visit them any time you want. Occasionally, remains of long dead soldiers are unearthed here during excavations. I've never heard of anyone ever seeing a ghost of a soldier from that era. They have a huge GM plant nearby and behind it is a tunnel locals call the Screaming Caves, a place frequented by young people all the time. There's supposedly a child ghost that wanders around there screaming her head off. Why do people go to these places if they're afraid of ghosts?

Are you afraid of funeral homes too?

You already said why. To drink and have sex. Like you claimed to see in the cemetery. Or. they could be interested in the paranormal itself. Everyone likes a good scare now and then on a dark night. Except for you ofcourse. I guess you and your buddies hung out there to catch lovers in the act. Good times eh?

Actually battlefields are reknowned areas for spotting ghosts. Gettysburg is perhaps one of the most famous. Here's one that dates back to the War of 1812:

Here's a history of paranormal activity around Gettysburg. Actual ghost photos upon request.
