I can say from my own observing of investigations that there is neither fraud nor misperception going on with the more seasoned and trained investigators. Various mundane causes are routinely ruled out at every point. The shadow of a passing car thru a window. The effect of a breeze in an open hallway. Rats and mice and pigeons. More times than not they arrive at some very compelling phenomena that have no mundane explanation: voices from empty rooms, footsteps on the upper floor of a deserted bldg, cell door closings in an abandoned prison, and light anomalies galore. You have only to witness this activity often enough to realize it is a very real and typical phenomenon that occurs over and over again from one haunted location to the next. It is not frequent, but in the rare instances evidence is captured on film it is really striking.
I don't think I wrote that clear enough originally, It's not that I think the investigators are in the fraud, I think if anything they are actually the butt end of the joke. After all while some might find it fun to hunt ghosts in dark places, others would find it more fun screwing with the results of those hunting for ghosts.
It wouldn't take much effort for a bunch of Tech Savvy Fraternity members to Prank a voice here, or a malevolent demon there.

But that's the thing. If you were familiar with how investigations like these are run, you'd know the entire location is evacuated beforehand, leaving no possibility of pranking or hidden frat boys. It's all very scientific.

Evacuating an area isn't going to stop a prank if the prank has already been set up. For instance it's possible to use Ultrasound to bounce sounds off objects to create a form of Ventriloquism, so the sound appears to come from somewhere close by. Any equipment used to detect it would also assume the sound was close by unless a laser matrice was used to identify resonance.
I've not seen paranormal investigators use lasers currently, they still seem to prefer EM based detection equipment (Microphones, Film etc).

No..the entire location is looked over. There is never any ultrasound equipment in these desolate locations operated remotely by sneaky frat boys. Usually there is no power at all to the location. Their own equipment is operated on batteries, which are frequently completely drained of their power, and yes they do use laser grids and well as thermal cameras and motion and vibration sensors.

The entire planet is filled/surrounded with noise producing antenna arrays, to find a location that's "Desolate" is a rare feat in this day and age. I guess the point is there can't ever be a true double blind to their "experiments" for that reason.
Incidentally I'm not trying to attack your belief system MR, I apologise if you feel that is what I was doing.

It's all good Stryder. I like discussing this. It tests my belief in it in a way, allowing me to see it afresh from a skeptical perspective.
