So true about, Dido! She’s a tough act to follow.

I like that “Lost in Yesterday” ^

Reminds me of someone else, but I can’t think of the artist right now.

Yah, this is actually placing that song in the musical context it was unconsciously modeled on or meant for -- or consciously even, if Apple was deliberately channeling into that influence when writing it.

Venturing into a "what if" that unavoidably comes to my mind...

Aside from the problem of Apple and SNZ debuting in the same decade, the Squirrel Nut Zippers could never have done a cover of it because that "similar to Billie Holiday" voice of Katharine Whalen's just doesn't quite fit it. Certainly, Holiday's early [jazz] lounge singing was perfect for a film-noir type atmosphere lyric/melody of some kind. But not exactly the texture of "Criminal". (IMO, anyway. Would love to be proven wrong.)

Possibly right, but would anyone care since she seems pretty underrated.

Not familiar with them, but...doing a little research, I wonder if they would have been more popular (whatever that means) if Disney didn't get involved. I'm not sure when that happened, but Disney ruins everything, imo. lol

Well, it figures... Fiona's childhood jazz influences literally were Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. So that arguably nixes my idea that the song would be somewhat incompatible with Katharine Whalen's vocal style. (Obviously, the instrumental part would have been a breeze for the original Squirrel band.)

If not the one below, then I bet you remember this one making the rounds on alt-rock stations. It was the Zips: https://youtu.be/yS2IBMQIjDo
