GOP suffers 'extinction-level event' that puts entire party's future in jeopardy

EXCERPTS: Democrats secured a historic midterm victory Tuesday night that is not only expected to hand the party its strongest extended House majority in more than 30 years, but could bring about an end to the Republican Party in perpetuity, Punchbowl News reported Wednesday.

“This isn’t a blue wave or even a tsunami. Tuesday night’s midterm election was an extinction-level event for President Donald Trump’s party on Capitol Hill,” Punchbowl News’ report reads.

In the House, Democrats are projected to secure at least 258 seats in the 435-seat chamber. The last time Democrats controlled 258 seats in the House was for a brief period lasting less than two months in 2009. Before that, the last time Democrats held such a majority was 1995.

[...] A diminished, lame-duck Trump now has to govern with a Democratic House and Senate for the last two years of his presidency,” Punchbowl News’ report reads.

“Trump’s path to further packing the Supreme Court and federal judiciary is blocked, while Democrats will seek to end his war against Iran, rein in the tariff regime and harsh immigration crackdown, and investigate allegations of corruption against him, his family and his corporate allies.”

The outlet left little doubt about what sank Republicans: the party’s embrace of the president.

“Republicans — especially their leadership — locked arms with Trump, refusing to criticize him over the Iran war and resulting price hikes while also working overtime to shield him from any legislative or legal attempts to undo his actions,” Punchbowl News’ report reads. “This has been their posture even when Trump openly undermined them, which happens quite often.”

INTRO: After a blue tsunami sweeps across America, Emily Jashinsky is joined by Mark Halperin, editor-in-chief of 2WAY and host of “Next Up with Mark Halperin,” to break down what went wrong for Republicans and what comes next.

Mark reveals what GOP insiders really knew before the election and examines Ron DeSantis' potential 2028 presidential ambitions.

Then, Emily is joined by political commentator and American Enterprise Institute nonresident senior fellow Ruy Teixeira to examine how Democrats overcame their political vulnerabilities, why Republican attacks fell flat, and whether the party risks overreaching after its resounding victory.

Plus, did Democrats steal Trump's populist message? Emily also weighs in on the bitter blame game involving President Trump, JD Vance, Tucker Carlson, and others.

Once again proving how stupidly out-of-touch Trump is about his own popularity and likeability. It's the effect of living inside a MAGA bubble of craven yes-men and flattering suck-ups. His own infantile narcissism and petty vindictiveness towards critics and objectors ultimately leading to his own inevitable downfall.

After Dubya and now Trump, the GOP has surely long-term stigmatized itself as the party that's going to start yet another freaking war in the Middle East. Carrying that type of mark would be enough to scare voters away from electing another Republican president in the future. You can't accommodate a dual obsession of rescuing Israel and fencing with rogue states in that part of the world if the consequences of that unbridled fixation eventually put your very political organization out of business.
