Understandably, he had a grudge due to exile. Chaplin grew up in poverty and oppressed circumstances. But the bottom line is that his father was a performer who became a self-destructive alcoholic, and his mother became insane from syphilis. (Contracted from either her estranged, prostitute-obssessed husband or another individual during their long-term separation.)

Oh, you mean those evil facts?

No wonder that was banned. Took a long time to accustom Americans to insufferable lecturing as a form of entertainment.

Chaplin himself was a success, though, in spite of that. Literally rags to riches. So it's kind of like he spends the latter part of his career apologizing or making amends to the crab culture in the bucket for escaping it or not allowing them to pull him down.
