INTRO: The British Parliament has approved landmark legislation that will permanently prevent younger generations from legally buying cigarettes, marking one of the toughest anti-smoking measures introduced anywhere in the world.

Under the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, anyone born after the end of 2008 will never be allowed to purchase cigarettes, cigars, or other tobacco products. The law works by gradually increasing the legal age for tobacco sales by one year every year, meaning today’s younger teenagers will remain permanently excluded from legal access to smoking products.

The bill now only requires formal approval from King Charles III before becoming law, a step widely seen as procedural. Once enacted, the new rules are expected to take effect from January 2027 and will apply across all four parts of the United Kingdom - England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting described the measure as a major step toward ending smoking-related harm in the country. “Children in the U.K. will be part of the first smoke-free generation, protected from a lifetime of addiction and harm,” he said.

At present, the legal age for purchasing cigarettes, tobacco products, and vaping devices is 18. The new legislation does not ban smoking itself, but instead removes the possibility of legal tobacco purchases for future generations.

The law also gives the government broader powers to regulate tobacco, nicotine, and vaping products, including control over flavors, packaging, and product presentation. .. (MORE - missing details)

So adults of different ages now have different legal rights. That wouldn't be legal in the US.
And why not ban cigarettes for sale entirely? Yes, they would move to the black market, but for many, that is a deterrent.

A blanket ban would of made sense, however peoples sensibilities wouldn't allow it. (Nicotine should be banned too since it establishes physical addiction.)

Should probably handle it a bit like Singapore with narcotics and have people put to death if they continue smoking. (satire)

I don't know about banning all uses of nicotine.

Yes, nicotine is considered to have limited medicinal applications, primarily as a tool for smoking cessation and, increasingly, in research for treating neurodegenerative disorders, cognitive impairment, and specific inflammations. It acts on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, offering potential therapeutic benefits in Parkinson’s disease, ADHD, and pain relief. However, due to its high addiction potential and cardiovascular side effects, its use is strictly managed.
