Prosecutor Kate Blumgart KC told jurors yesterday the teenagers used the messages to lure Mr Cashford down to the seafront as part of a ‘deliberate plan to attack him’.

Luring is a dangerous pastime. I’d say both sides were guilty of it. Cashford cast his lure first but didn’t catch what he was hoping for. Biggest difference was that the deceased’s luring was part of a hunt, the girl being the desired prey. Tried to bait a bunny but a grizzly showed up instead. The joy of the hunt didn’t materialize. The hunter became the hunted. Not the first time this has happened in nature. Cashford didn’t think it through, either disregarding or oblivious to the danger.

Cashford gambled and lost. Did he risk his own life? Does he deserve a Darwin? He did not outwit his prey. Not unusual for a hunter to be killed by his intended target or for authorities to seek out and punish the prey for doing so. Don’t think the laws of the jungle excludes humans.

Did Cashford deserve to die? Probably not, but taught a lesson? I think so. He was as guilty as sin attempting to hurt that girl. He wasn’t about to run to the police even if he lived through it. Imagining him being sent to prison, living in solitary, being classified as the lowest of the low, looking over your shoulder, being a target. Can’t be fun.
