"Autopoiesis was first introduced and elaborated by Chilean evolutionary and systems biologists Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela in Autopoiesis and Cognition: The Realization of the Living (Maturana and Varela, 1972/1980). The term designated for them a new knowledge of “the organization of living systems” that is premised on the idea that all living entities are unities organized around specific dynamic relations and not any essence or set of component parts.
