Chase or Escort?

As you might be aware aircraft require flight lights to identify which direction they are headed. It's dangerous not to have them shown as it means you don't know which way they are travelling and it's difficult to tell if they are changing course. If a helicopter was to "Escort", they would likely need to both have communication with those flying as well as have them in front (So they can see where they are).

I did have a peek at some of the Flying Taxi's in development and in some instances you could see how an "orb" would be the cockpit as the propellers are only visible at night if lit. It would tally with some of the statements about the types of traffic people were getting mixed up with such as drones and aircraft (since those taxis are octacopters similar to drones)

That being said I don't think any developer would be flying one around without flight lights due to the issues already mentioned and how it would endanger commercial passengers.

Drone scares aren't just an American thing.

The Danish National Police say this evening that they have verified unusual and unknown drone activity around Aalborg, Esbjerg and Sønderborg Airports, as well as Skrydstrup Air Base. Reports that Aalborg airport has been closed to commercial traffic tonight after unknown drones were spotted hovering over the runways. Copenhagen's main airport, the largest airport in Denmark that handles most international flights, was closed a day ago for the same reason though it has since reopened. A Copenhagen police spokesman said that whoever was doing it was a "capable actor".

An alert has been declared by the Royal Danish Air Force.

There's lots of speculation on the internet that it's the Russians. The NATO Secretary General says Russian involvement can't be ruled out. The Russians are dismissive of the whole suggestion. The Danish Prime Minister says that it's the biggest threat to Danish critical infrastructure to date.

Drones are now a European thing.

Munich's large airport has been shut down for the last two days because of mystery drones. The German authorities seem to have no idea who is operating them. Many flights have been canceled.

Drones have been observed around Prague's airport as well, but that airport hasn't been closed.

Denmark has invited drone-warfare specialists from Ukraine, which has lots of experience with drones.

Drones have been observed in Norway and the Netherlands too.

At the very least, the exceedingly lame response to all this drone excitement illustrates the vulnerability of both Europe and the United States to unconventional drone warfare. A nation state opponent or a terrorist group could easily create havoc with explosive-armed drones that these countries seem unprepared to combat.

Commercial drones for the majority tend to have regulations in regards to usage applied per country (or collective countries like the EU) that requires them to have an active operators transponder over certain sizes and regulated in regards to where they are flown. (There's numerous sites identifying "no-fly zones" specifically around airports)

If a drone is being operated without an Operator or Drone ID being presented then it's illegal, especially if it's locations that aren't suppose to be flown.

It could be for "Ransom" attacks of airports (due to airport shutdowns). It's also possible that the drones are snooping, not just visuals of the location but RF (Both the internal network of the airport, including ATC, as well as Mobile networks and possibly even RFID tracking of individuals from their passports or lanyards)

It's likely criminal groups operating it but with the support of a rogue state. (This is why any hack attacks shouldn't be paid off with Bitcoins, as it funds further iterations of attack.)

Flights are currently being diverted from Vilnius Lithuania to Riga Latvia, because of drones.

And BILD is reporting that the Bundeswehr (German army) believes that the drones that closed Munich International Airport on Thursday and Friday were “military-grade reconnaissance drones” launched and flown by an unknown actor.

My personal guess is the usual suspect: Russia.

NATO has been talking about supplying Ukraine with longer range weaponry able to reach into Russia, so Russia might be sending the message that NATO countries aren't exactly unreachable either.

The "unknown actor":

Turns out that the Lithuanian "drone" in the post above, was really a smuggling balloon carrying a cargo of contriband across the nearby Belarussian border. Nothing exciting, apparently it was cigarettes.

But many armed Russian attack drones are active tonight above next door Ukraine
