If I accept the possibility that the two researchers encountered this with (by chance) a photographer behind them .. then the rest of the paper might be OK. Otherwise, it may not be entirely bullshit but I'm suspicious.
Weird plasma with many characteristics of 'life' produced at ground level and high in the atmosphere .. rather different chemistry going on there. I'm now going with 'all natural' but it sure looks spooky to me.
Edit .. many thanks for posting the links .. I wish I'd found them years ago .. though by way of defence I do predate the Internet by several years.
Hmm...just a thought...Princeton’s plasma physics laboratory is in New Jersey.

"Terry witnessed eight large orange orbs flying very low and silently along the beach. They performed maneuvers that no Earth-made aircraft could possibly perform, in complete silence. Terry filed a report of his sighting with MUFON. When he met with his fellow MUFON investigators and related his story, he was met with laughter and told that what he saw was nothing more than candle-lit Chinese lanterns."
Seems to be the common or stereotypical remedy for dispatching orange and red orbs.

EXCERPT: "I've photographed Chinese lanterns for weddings that I do. All of those have a center of brightness." said Burke.
Burke says the circles in sky she spotted were not like the lanterns she photographed. The lanterns she saw did not have that point of brightness. They were the same color all thew ay through. She described the orbs as moving against the wind, not with it unlike a lantern.
Driven by curiosity, Burke posted her video on Facebook. She was surprised to find out a lot of people had seen similar red circles all across the country, several were along the coast from Nags Head to Oak Island...
(2020) UFOs? Poultney residents says "no"; they launched Chinese 12 lanterns that night https://suncommunitynews.com/news/83426/...s-route-7/
EXCERPTS: A Middlebury couple, preferring to remain anonymous, told The Eagle that they observed four, slow-moving "glowing orange globes" while driving north in a car along U.S. Route 7 near the town of Pittsford.
[...] The Vermont State Police dispatcher in Rutland confirmed to The Eagle that the alleged unidentified flying objects (UFOs) were sighted over Rutland County during the evening of Sept. 19 but could not provide specific details beyond what the couple reported.
[...] "The globes were flying in tandem," one of the pair said. "The sky was crystal clear and the stars were visible. But these things weren't stars or planets. They moved slowly and in a distinct pattern and direction. They were not erratic and appeared to be under intelligent control just like regular aircraft."
[...] Since the couple reported the objects to police, a Poultney resident contacted The Eagle on Sept. 23 and said that the "UFOs" were probably Chinese lanterns launched as part of a local memorial celebration.
Duby said that attendees of the event launched 12 lanterns, four at a time, as part of the gathering. If the lanterns were seen by the Middlebury couple, they would have been visible at a distance of over 30 miles.
Duby told The Eagle that a similar UFO report of orange globes, made in August of this year in nearby Wells, Vermont, was likely Chinese lanterns as well.
[...] But the Middlebury couple told The Eagle that they are dubious about lanterns being what they saw on Sept. 19. They told The Eagle on Sept. 24 that they are familiar with Chinese lanterns used in various celebrations and said that the orange globes they saw, which were flying high over Route 7, did not behave in the same erratic way.
"No way," they both said. "Lanterns would have been way too small for us to see so far away from where they were supposed to have been launched."
Similar orange globes in the sky have been reported elsewhere in Vermont; they have not been linked to floating Chinese lanterns...
I've watched enough videos of orange lights in the sky to begin to tell the difference between chinese lanterns and flares and true orange orbs. Typically the lanterns will slowly and steadily drift across the sky. There will usually be several of them. And as they drift will look like glowing bags which are lit from within and on the bottom. They also tend to flicker like a flame. Flares will only descend gradually and are usually all in a row and also tend to light up and fizzle out one after the other. Orange orbs on the other hand will move in erratic ways or very fast or remain totally stationary and are a bright orange defined sphere, like a fireball. Below are some examples:
I went ahead and ordered that book. I am curious what conclusions the author reached and any insights he had after studying orbs so intensely for a year.

1) they're not drones just planes and stars..
2) we don't know who is behind the drones..
3) they're not a threat...
4) we are banning the drones from the airspace.
Methinks they know more than they are letting on..
I don't think it's so much that.
You probably had a bunch of Drone Enthusiasts creating a race at a weekend for their drones (Thus the lighting "Giurl" orbs), they likely didn't tell everyone in advance however they weren't likely breaking laws. The problem is that without knowing who was responsible it's led to hysteria which in turn leads to the potential of copycat occurances by malicious actors which is why they've shut the airspace down from drones for the duration. (The group using the airspace would likely have to identify their plans in the future to stop the airspace being shutdown in this manner.)
A variation on the Sherlock Holmes thing..

Clear video and magnified still of a bright uap orb captured over NJ from a day ago. Note that this is AFTER the establishment of the drone no-fly zone by the Feds.
