INTRO: For the first time, Muhammad has claimed the top spot as the most popular baby name for boys in the UK, according to data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The name surpassed Noah, now in second place, while Oliver ranked third on the newly released 2023 list.

In 2023, 4,661 boys were named Muhammad across England and Wales, up from 4,177 the previous year.

In contrast, only 4,382 boys were named Noah, a decline from 4,586 in 2022. This marks the first time a single spelling of Muhammad has topped the list without combining variations or alternate spellings.

The name Muhammad, meaning "praiseworthy" in Arabic, is deeply rooted in Islamic tradition and is one of the most common names worldwide. Mohammed, an alternative spelling, ranked 28th on the list, down one spot from the previous year, further reflecting its enduring popularity... (MORE - details)
