If you have nothing and someone gives you $20G, what’s the first thing you’d do with it? Invest in stock market? Buy something you really need? Party?

In Canada, indigenous youth receive $20G when they turn 18. It’s guaranteed money owed to them through past treaties and deals with our govt. From my personal experience, and I know a fair number of these kids, not one has any of the money left at all. No telling what adults are doing with their own pile of money, I suspect more of the same.

Question is…… is the govt really giving them money if they put it all back into the Canadian economy? Actually it could be keeping my taxes lower. So yeah, govt may actually be using the disadvantaged to aid the economy and keep taxes down. Good for those that have.

I'd save it to live off of. I think most people would, especially 18 yr olds about to fly the nest. And that's probably the assumption made by that government program. You don't financially help out people you think are just going to squander that help.
