Different ballgame now. The only survey polls that ever mattered are the ones that come after Kamala's coup. The independents who sway to feel-good sentiments and quota-regime hand gesticulations will give the Dems a spike.

Biden camp worried about Biden's "legacy". I think his legacy will be better for stepping aside and giving the Dems a chance to defeat Trump. He did the right thing, and that took humility and courage.

Now that Biden is out of the race, will there be anybody even bothering to watch over or be his cognitive caretaker for the rest of the year?
I mean, there's no second term to worry about rescuing, anymore. No public image to patch up via his blunders. The staff may very well leave him alone to his unbridled impulses. For the remainder of his term, Biden is free to imperil the country with policies he might witlessly believe in his senile state are utopian. Does he really care about not endangering Kamala's campaign negatively, in that way (as does the gander, so will the goose)? Probably not when he's fully alert.
