New England Patriots compared to Taylor Swift as Belichick slammed over Mac Jones

EXCERPTS: The stuttering New England Patriots offence has been unfavourably compared to Taylor Swift ’s music career after they suffered a difficult loss to the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night.

The Bills were simply superior to their division rivals and dealt the Patriots a killer blow to their playoff hopes in the 24-10 win at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. It was Buffalo’s third Thursday night win of the season, becoming the first franchise to achieve such a feat after victories over the Los Angeles Rams and Detroit Lions earlier in the campaign.

The win takes the Bills to 9-3 on the season, while the Patriots are left with a 6-6 record. It is now highly unlikely that head coach Bill Belichick will lead his team to the playoffs for successive seasons after they reached the postseason last year before they were dumped out by Buffalo.

Mac Jones - who was selected by the Patriots in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft - completed 22-of-36 passes for just 195 yards and a touchdown to go with no interceptions as his Patriots took a 7-3 lead before surrendering 21 unanswered points. After another drive ended prematurely, the television cameras capturing the Amazon Prime broadcast showcased Jones visibly frustrated on the sideline as he shouted: “Throw the f****** ball! F****** run game sucks! F***!

[...] Brooke Pryor made an interesting comment... “I’d like to borrow a line from my favourite songstress, Taylor Swift: ‘The old Patriots can’t come to the phone right now - they’re dead’,” Pryor said. “But unlike Taylor Swift, they’re not evolving to a good thing. They’re taking a step back here and I think it is hurting Mac Jones and his evolution as a quarterback. They’re playing it too safe, but it shows how hard it is to move on from a guy who defined your organisation for so long.” (MORE - missing details)

Don’t follow Taylor Swift but I do the Bills. B-lo only 10km down the road and it’s impossible to go anywhere in this area without seeing the Bills’ logo on clothing, store signs and windows, vehicles etc.

So much of football success depends on having a good/franchise quarterback and there’s no doubt the Belichek/Brady Combo exemplified that over a 20 year span. If you listen to Buffalo Sports Radio WGR550 you might think that’s all a team needs to have a shot at the Super Bowl. The other thing is NO injuries but the Bills have had plenty of those this year.

Does the coach make the player or the other way round? Would Brady have won without Belichek? I think despite his gruff looking exterior that Belichek is a football genius and I would compare him to Vince Lombardi in that regard. A great judge of talent and how to utilize it. Maybe Swift needed someone like that.

I recall hubby talking about Cleveland being dumb to take Baker Mayfield as the first selection of that particular NFL draft, instead of Josh Allen. Though even after that, Allen was still available all the way to seventh pick for the lucky Bills to grab.

Speaking of Cleveland, during his four-year stint coaching the Browns in the early '90s, Belichick only had one winning season (36-44 overall record).

So he seems to need a great quarterback, as well as requiring enough authority over a team's operations to effectively be the manager.

Brady seems to need a good coach or coaching staff to orchestrate the rest of the players.

And they both need exceptional scouting [and management when Belichek himself is not such] that goes the extra mile to provide them with the right players (especially neglected ones that can be got on the cheap, at least initially).

Brady is pretty much going nowhere in Tampa Bay this year, sans the rare convergence of those three aspects that he had all those years at New England.

Sounds like those radio guys know what they’re talking about. Everything starts at the QB. if he’s generational talent then you’re off to the races and football immortality. Once dust settles some guy comes along and calls you a football genius. Big Grin
