The weather nerds are saying that what happened here today was what they call a Fujiwara effect, when two storms get close enough to spin around each other and add energy.

Wind gusts in the 70 mph range. In San Francisco they say the wind was getting channeled between tall buildings in the 90 mph range. Pedestrians were getting blown off their feet, windows were getting blown out of high rises. Police were blocking off streets.
