Disenchanted qualifies as amiss. When that happens to me, I just quit posting. I don't remove my avatars. Doing that is attention-seeking.

Not really. It’s always meant finality to me. Kind of like packing a bag. But, yea - disenchanted is the right word.
Yet, it got you attention, and you're still here posting about it. Not very final.
Don't let the door hit you on your way out. (Jun 9, 2021 07:48 PM)Leigha Wrote: Not really. It’s always meant finality to me. Kind of like packing a bag. But, yea - disenchanted is the right word. I can understand why you’d delete your avatar if you’re not planning on ever posting again, but why would you delete an entire thread that others had responded to?
Years ago I was driving with my mother in the car.
She said (I forget why) "You get pleasure out of givng pleasure" I'd be about forty-something at the time so you'd think parental wisdom would have been transferred by then. Not give and take. Something for absolutely no reward except that someone else enjoys it. As her words seem to ring true I had to ask her why she hadn't said this when I was (for example) 5 not 45. Through the somewhat evasive answer I could only figger that she'd thought I wasn't ready to hear it. (Jun 9, 2021 08:29 PM)Secular Sanity Wrote:(Jun 9, 2021 07:48 PM)Leigha Wrote: Not really. There could be a POV out there that the original poster has a lingering obligation to eventually check in on a recently started thread again in the course of a month (or several?). By deleting it, not only is that nagging hypothetical responsibility eliminated, but the subliminal temptation or excuse that it might supply to re-visit a forum. Which would thereby undermine the "all bridges burned" determination to finally be rid of it, or the overall classic category of discussion groups one desires to finally severe ways with once and for all. That would be a personal problem that you're attempting to handle by requiring others to sacrifice. That is the height of selfishness. You can always change your forum passwords to some incoherent, long, and random string of characters that you do not save or write down. Bridge burned without adversely affecting anyone else...or seeking attention for your leaving. "Lingering obligation" is just a nice way to say obsessive or compulsive behavior. No one has a duty to excuse you hitting their face just because you can't keep yourself from swinging your fist. |
