Biden cancer charity scam

President-elect Joe Biden's cancer charity spent the majority of its money on staff payroll and gave none to research, it has been revealed.

First reported by The New York Post, tax filings viewed by DailyMail.com showed that The Biden Cancer Initiative amassed $4,809,619 in contributions, but spent $3,070,301 on salaries.

Joe and Jill Biden founded The Biden Cancer Initiative in 2017 to help find a cure and ‘solutions to accelerate progress in cancer prevention.’

But it appeared no grants were given out during its first two years of operation.

But if they gave grants then they don’t have enough in there for another year of salaries. The hell with cancer, my job’s more important

There does seem to be an explanation - disinformation and (more) fake news.

The article in OP did reflect the below correctly. There's just that non sequitur or loaded-language or questionable add-on of "grants" slipped in elsewhere to potentially mislead or spin-doctor.

July 16, 2019 HCPLive: "The nonprofit promoted nearly 60 partnerships with drug companies, health care firms, charities and other organizations that pledged more than $400 million to improve cancer treatment, reported the Associated Press."

MSN circulated DAILY MAIL article: "The Biden Cancer Initiative [BCI] has taken in several million dollars in direct funding for its operations, but the bulk of the money supporting the partnerships it promotes came in the form of indirect pledges. That money did not go directly to the nonprofit but instead has been managed by the participating companies and organizations to fund their research and work. Biden’s group has used its platform and Biden’s appearances to promote the partnerships. [...] The Biden Cancer Initiative did not distribute any money towards research or provide grants during its first two years, tax filings revealed..."

But the "broader focus and promises" of the BCI and its "building on Moonshot" kind of invites filling in the blanks, possibly with speculations like grants.

CancerLetter, June 2017: The new nonprofit, which was launched in New York on June 26, will have a broader focus than the Cancer Moonshot, the Obama White House initiative that had set specific goals and endpoints. The Biden Cancer Initiative promises to build on Biden’s work in the Beau Biden Cancer Moonshot and “develop and drive implementation of solutions to accelerate progress in cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis, research, and care, and to reduce disparities in cancer outcomes.”

Similar to criticism of Soon Shiong's formerly named "cancer moonshot" (further down, bottom), could the Obama administration's Moonshot be a potential altruistic facade for promotional purposes, too? Was short-lived BCI merely impotently adding on to such?

If this seems a garbled mess to sort out, note that multiple cancer "moonshots" originated circa the same year (2016).

"A portion of the 21st Century Cures Act (2016) was named the "Beau Biden Cancer Moonshot" initiative after him." (from Beau Biden) ..... The Cancer Moonshot Initiative: "The Cancer Moonshot initiative is a coalition launched by the Obama administration in January 2016 with a goal of finding vaccine-based immunotherapy options against cancer. It was launched by Vice President Joe Biden after President Barack Obama challenged America to end cancer during his final State of the Union Address."

Soon-Shiong’s version of Moonshot:

Cancer Breakthroughs 2020: "Cancer Breakthroughs 2020, formerly Cancer Moonshot 2020, is a coalition announced in January 2016 in the United States with the goal of finding vaccine-based immunotherapies against cancer. [...] The original Cancer MoonShot 2020 name reportedly came from a speech Vice President Joe Biden made in the Rose Garden in October 2015, promising a "moonshot" to cure cancer. The speech was said to be triggered by the death of Biden's son Beau to cancer. [...] Cancer Breakthroughs 2020 is led by the National Immunotherapy Coalition (NIC), an initiative reportedly led by Los Angeles billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong."

Feb, 2017: He vowed to cure cancer. But this billionaire’s moonshot is falling far short of the hype (excerpt): The supremely self-confident billionaire behind that vision has drawn attention at the highest levels: He’s talked cancer research with Joe Biden, Bill Clinton, even the Pope. He’s met with President Donald Trump at least twice since the election. Riding high on his pledge to win the war on cancer, Soon-Shiong is said to have pitched a role for himself as national health care czar in discussions with Trump’s team.

But a STAT investigation of Soon-Shiong’s cancer moonshot has found very little scientific progress. At its core, the initiative appears to be an elaborate marketing tool for Soon-Shiong — a way to promote his pricey new cancer diagnostic tool at a time when he badly needs a business success, as his publicly-traded companies are losing tens of millions per quarter. STAT also found several instances of inflated claims, with the moonshot team taking credit for progress that doesn’t appear to be real.

Soon-Shiong’s use of the moonshot to advance his business interests may be good for his investors. But it also increasingly looks destined to disappoint patients — the latest in a long trail of failed quests to win the war on cancer.

[...] He launched his moonshot the very same week [coincidence?] that then-Vice President Biden introduced the federal moonshot to fight cancer. (The two are completely separate, though Biden did ask Soon-Shiong to advise him on the federal project.)
