Ontario finance minister resigns after tropical vacation

INTRO: The finance minister for Canada's most populous province resigned Thursday after going on a Caribbean vacation during the pandemic and seemingly trying to hide the fact by sending social media posts showing him in a sweater before a fireplace. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he had accepted Rod Phillips’s resignation as minister hours after Phillips returned home from a more than two-week stay on the island of St. Barts despite government guidelines urging people to avoid nonessential travel.

"Travelling over the holidays was the wrong decision, and I once again offer my unreserved apology,” Phillips said in a statement confirming his resignation... (MORE)

Yes another politician who doesn’t practice what he preaches. I think the premier (governor) couldn’t lie for him anymore. The deal before finance minister left for vacation was probably...you get caught and no one here is going to admit they knew about it, then you resign.

Selfishness is out of control. By voting for people who support leftist thinking you can’t complain when they exhibit this behaviour.  A lot of apologies and we’ll see how many of these elected officials keep their portfolio or lose status. Hoping this sparks a move toward the right or at least opens eyes.

My attempt at a leftist argument?.... No need to punish an employee who doesn't follow protocol. There may be some underlying mental/fatigue issues or heaven forbid, racial undertones. Poor maligned politician, unfairly beaten up by a relentlessly biased misinformed press. An invasion of privacy. All workers are entitled to a paid holiday? .... Probably missed a few things like the state on the hook for all assistance he needs to re-adjust back into the workplace.

Er.. doesn't democracy suggest the electorate have a considerable amount of power? Like the power to remove (say) a president they don't like? One kind'a hopes the people will choose the best to act on their behalf but with half the electorate being of below average intelligence it is unlikely that everyone will be applying the same yardstick.

Well, populism, itself, isn't necessarily a bad thing, when it seeks to favor the majority of average people over the elites or special interest groups. The problem is pandering to smaller minority/interest groups in order to keep the elites in power. So you can see the left/right dichotomy right there. Real populism versus exploited populism.

Democracy suggests that free and fair elections will favor the people, but those of below average intelligence don't care if elections are not fair, so long as they get their senile, corrupt, career politician puppet in office. When cheating is involved, the people are disenfranchised. But those of below average intelligence, as you demonstrate, will never recognize it.
