Chinese Wuhan Virus

Quote:The latter numbers make the otherwise outlandish rumor that was going around the Chinese internet a few days ago that this is something that escaped from a germ warfare lab more plausible.

I thought the lesson was learned in WWI? ...... when using poison gas, make sure the wind is blowing the right way.

More urban legend?....  When applying makeup a few months from now, think of the cosmetic industry and what constitutes the property of the state in China.

What is the life expectancy of workers in Chinese Bio-Labs?

Will we no longer see the label "Made in China" on imported goods?

Stanford University has just canceled all on-campus classes and moved all classes online. This only for the last two weeks of Winter Quarter, but they say that they are still assessing what to do about upcoming Spring Quarter.

https://healthalerts.stanford.edu/

The concern that I have is that the majority or Stanford students live in on-campus residences. So even if they aren't attending class, they are still in close proximity to each other.

I'm in self-isolate mode. I called the UK help-line and the recording said I didn't need to talk to them if my symptoms were mild. They are mild and I haven't talked to them or been tested. My conclusion is that the UK new cases count is absolutely meaningless.

I'm not even a number Sad

According to that overall sphere of endeavor that has many appearances under the junk science category -- i.e., the "human, biomedical, and bean counting sciences" -- the older you are the more dangerous it is. Fortunately, you're in the 4% chance age bracket, which swells after 70 and soars all the way to 18% after age 80.

Still good reason to look after yourself, though, as what begins as "mild" can turn menacing pretty fast. Last week I came down with something really bad (was on the verge of dehydration since water alone even triggered retching). Took all the quack supplements I could muster to turn it around in a couple of days. (Which accordingly I can't publicly recommend due to commitment to being responsible when necessary.)

Same here. I have a sore throat, body aches, fatigue, minor cough, running nose but no fever. This is the third day. No worse, no better. It’s probably just a cold but I canceled a girl’s trip just to play it safe. Mild, though, nothing like when I had the flu awhile back.

I don’t get it, though, the stats on the swine flu appear to be more substantial but we didn’t shut down everything back then. What gives?

Edit: C C already answered that.

In the UK we seem to be going down the path of building up herd immunity. Let the young catch it so they can no longer transmit it. If the timing is right it will kinda sweep through areas somewhat sequentially rather than all at once. Sports events are mostly attended by the young (? never actually been to one nor (probably) have the kind of people making the plans) ) so let them get it too. See where I'm coming from? China's policy of isolation leaves them with the problem of preventing the virus coming back in.

Edit - I'm not feeling quite as perky as I did earlier. Probably did the right thing staying at home.

Edit - UK sporting events (football) have now been stopped.

It seems UK planes have turned back from Spain. Not turned back by the Spanish but rather If you can't get wasted on cheap booze there's no point in going.

Wow! From what's being reported and from some of the videos I've seen, it looks like everyone is losing their shit. Serously injuring each other over toilet paper and water, WTF?

I'm back in action. It must have been just a cold or an extremely mild case.

Worse? Better? Hang in there, old man. I still have a few relativity questions on the back burner for you.

Absolutely fine. Mild case of hypochondria - I feel a bit of a fraud really.

I was better before I read that though.

My rich buddy has given up trying to get staff to come in and self-isolated himself. More of a holiday mood than gloom and doom round these parts.

Our Wuhan handshake has evolved into something close to twerking (Mrs C2 only).

Just a friendly reminder that you have a higher risk of developing a severe case. Don’t cry wolf too many times or Mrs. C2 might not be so gung-ho to help when you really need her.
