Boy, 6, born with 'tail' is worshipped as a monkey god but parents hide him away

EXCERPT: A six-year-old boy born with a 'tail' is being worshipped as a monkey god, but his parents have been forced to hide him away due to the attention. Shivam Kumar's neighbours believe he is a divine being due to the unusual growth of hairs on his back, so they shower him with chocolates and snacks. They flocked to see him as word spread after he was born in Delhi, India, and some came with flowers believing he was a reincarnation of Hanuman, a powerful monkey deity for Hindus. The growth shocked doctors and Shivam's parents, including his mother Reena, 30, refuse to shave it off because "it would bring a bad omen for our family".

The incessant visits took place for almost a full year before the family's local guru asked them to stop letting people carry on with worshipping him as a God. The guru said it would have untold effects on his psyche in later life. Since then, the boy has been living his life normally, but continues to be pampered by his neighbours. His mother said: [...] "Our guru suggested asking people to stop this madness and let them live their life, so we followed his instructions and the people now have lessened approaching us although it has not stopped completely. [...] Shivam's grandmother said: "He acts and behaves like a monkey. He will laugh like an ape and always keep jumping." He will invert himself and stay with his legs up in the air just like a monkey would do. We initially thought it would improve with time but this is also similarly an indication that he might be an incarnation of Lord Hanuman and we cannot deny it." (MORE)

Boy, 13, with a 'tail' is revered as the reincarnation of a monkey god
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article...llage.html

EXCERPT: A teenage Muslim boy born with a one-and-a-half foot long 'tail' is revered by Hindus in an Indian village who see him as an incarnation of the monkey god Lord Hanuman. Sohail Shah, 13, was born in a small village near Madhya Pradesh, central India with a patch of thick hair on his lower back that has grown long and matted together into a tail.

He is so popular that people from far off villages flock to him every other day to be blessed. They bring a bag full of fruits such as bananas and mangoes for Sohail in exchange for the blessings. The schoolboy is also revered at school, particularly by teachers who never scold him in fear of upsetting the God. The boy was born with a growth of hair on his back which has now grown in length and matted into a tail. It is unclear why the boy has developed the growth, but it is likely a result of a neural tube deformity.

[...] The teen said: 'I am not at all embarrassed because of my tail. I was born with this and it is very much part of my life now.'I have seen people treating me like God since my birth so it is not new for me. They call me Hanuman and touch my feet for blessings. If I am walking on road, they come to me and join their hands asking for blessings. Some give me bananas and mangoes-my favourite fruits. I am treated specially by everyone in the village be it Muslims or Hindus and I feel fantastic about it. They refer to him as Lord Hanuman, which is a monkey-deity and flock to see him at his home.... (MORE)

Apparently a tuft of hair at the base of the spine might in some cases be an indication of deeper spinal malformations. These can include spinal bifida (including mild cases with few other symptoms), minor spinal fluid leaks and so on. Apparently nobody is sure precisely how the unusual hair is connected developmentally to those problems, but it does seem to indicate a higher likelihood, so physicians consider it a warning to investigate with further tests.
