Bill Nye is a terrible spokesman for science
https://www.acsh.org/news/2019/05/13/bil...ence-14021

EXCERPT: When I was a kid, Bill Nye the Science Guy was a thing. [...] Some years later, Bill Nye experienced a resurgence in popularity. But instead of the old, nerdy-but-lovable Bill Nye, we got Bill Nye 2.0, a somewhat cantankerous scold who clearly knows less about science than he leads on. It was clear that something was amiss a few years ago when, amid Nye's renewed celebrity status, it came to light that he aired an episode of Eyes of Nye that perpetuated anti-GMO propaganda. Nye was subsequently criticized by the scientific and (especially) science writing communities. Not long thereafter, Nye had a change of heart. Good! Better late than never. But was this "conversion" based on a new understanding of biotechnology or simply a calculated marketing move? Evidence points toward the latter.... (MORE)

Bill Nye Brings Out the F-Bombs and a Blowtorch to Talk Climate Change
https://www.space.com/bill-nye-climate-c...liver.html

EXCERPT: Science popularizer Bill Nye told viewers of a popular late-night show that Earth is "on [expletive] fire" while lighting a globe with a blowtorch. During his appearance on HBO's "Last Week Tonight With John Oliver" on Sunday (May 12), Nye used frank language to talk to millennials about the impacts of global warming on Earth. (Nye's comments are heavily edited here for language; viewer discretion is advised if you watch the video.) [...] He explained that addressing climate change means making tough choices in our daily lives [...] Nye, adding a few more expletives in his explanation, said none of these options to address global warming come free. Nye is a joke of an engineer pretending to be a legit scientist. At least at one point he had the good sense to listen to real scientists instead of his own political agenda.

Tyson's a partisan idiot too. Astrophysics doesn't make you an authority on all the stuff he pops off about.

Hand it to Tyson (one for the scientist) that he eluded the kind of accusation or chopping block that media guys like Charlie Rose, Tavis Smiley, and Garrison Keillor couldn't.

I'm not sure Bill Nye is bureaucratically acrobatic enough to do that except as Patterson's fictional father on Blindspot. Then again that might arguably fall within just the kind of opportunistic maneuvering and special connections projected upon him by the author of the opinion piece. (But it wasn't sexual misconduct he wriggled out of on his last appearance May 12 on Blindspot).

EDIT: Forgot about Nye's problems with his ex-wife. Came across that last year when checking-out the item in parenthesis below. He's experienced the victim context himself, in a possibly different category.

Debut last year as Patterson's Dad, literally playing himself (has no kids in real life, so no conflict):

Return on that May 12 episode, where he was briefly eyed as a suspect:

I hated seeing Nye stink up a good show.

At least he usually doesn't get much love on The Big bang Theory, in favor of Professor Proton (Bob Newhart).
