What you need to know about the SNC-Lavalin affair (Feb 13)

No "pertinence" in meeting with SNC-Lavalin or the feds, Quebec justice minister says (excerpt): The Trudeau government has been in crisis mode for weeks because of the SNC-Lavalin controversy. Then federal cabinet minister Jody Wilson-Raybould resigned from the justice portfolio claiming she had been subject to pressure to provide a DPA to SNC-Lavalin rather than proceed with criminal charges. The DPA would allow the business to admit its guilt and pay a fine instead of facing charges of corrupting Libyan officials in order to obtain contracts between 2001 and 2011. A guilty verdict in such a case would see SNC-Lavalin barred from bidding on federal contracts for 10 years.

Jody Wilson-Raybould to still run for Liberals (intro): Jody Wilson-Raybould, the former cabinet minister who accused Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of trying to influence her decision in a criminal case against engineering firm SNC-Lavalin, has confirmed she intends to run as a Liberal in the next federal election. In a letter to constituents posted to her website Friday, Wilson-Raybould said the explosive political saga has been a “wake-up call” for Canadians about the “culture of conflict, empty partisanship and cynical games” that exists in Ottawa. Nonetheless, she said, she plans to stand for re-election as a Liberal in the Vancouver-Granville riding next fall because she got into politics to change that culture — and believes she still has plenty of work to do... Wilson-Raybould says she faced pressure, 'veiled threats' on SNC-Lavalin; Scheer calls on PM to resign (Feb 27): Jody Wilson-Raybould says she faced intense political pressure and veiled threats related to the SNC-Lavalin affair, and was warned directly by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about the negative consequences if the company faced prosecution. It was a day of high political drama, as the former justice minister and attorney general accused top Liberal government officials of inappropriate, excessive political interference in an independent criminal prosecution, and the opposition parties called for Trudeau's resignation and a public inquiry into the scandal... Jody Wilson-Raybould “told the truth about Justin Trudeau. I think he’s going to jail.” (Feb 27): Today Jody Wilson-Raybould testified about Justin Trudeau, Gerald Butts, and the rest of the Prime Minister’s Office, and others in the Liberal inner circle, other cabinet ministers, and even the head of the supposedly non-partisan civil service, the clerk of the privy council, Michael Wernick, how all of these people and more conspired to pressure her to drop criminal charges against a corrupt company called SNC Lavalin.

That’s a Quebec-based engineering firm that was caught paying $48 million in bribes in Libya. They were being prosecuted for those crimes in Canada, but because they’re a Quebec company, and Trudeau is a Quebec prime minister — well, the Libranos[*] instinct came out. And so the Montreal Liberals went to work on Jody Wilson-Raybould, the first aboriginal woman justice minister in Canadian history. They met with her, they pestered her, they pressed her, a dozen times. And she refused to bend. So they broke her — they fired her... (MORE)

[*] footnote: "The Liberal Party of Canada have no interest in “saving the planet”, and they were dubbed “the Libranos” in the 90’s for their habits of using the public purse (and access to contracts) to line their own pockets. Nothing has changed except the generation of those milking the public teat." -- Mike D in Calgary, Watts Up With That
